Fischer:'I want to talk about the destruction of the USA'

ImageJapan Court: Bobby Fischer Can Be Deported
Reuters - Aug 21 12:30am JST
...TOKYO (Reuters) - A Tokyo court on Friday rejected a request by former world chess champion Bobby Fischer to have the Japanese authorities halt procedures to deport him, his lawyer said.....
"This does not mean that he will be deported right away," Fischer's lawyer, Masako Suzuki, told Reuters, adding Justice Minister Daizo Nozawa still had to respond to a separate plea from Fischer. No deportation order has been issued, she said
...speaking to a Philippine radio station from his detention center, Fischer said late on Friday that the U.S. embassy in Japan had finally agreed to send an official to see him so he could formally renounce his citizenship.
"Hopefully, I'll be out of this stinking hole soon," he told Manila's DZRH radio station in a live, hour-long phone interview littered with anti-Semitic and anti-American remarks.
Asked to talk about "pleasant things," he said: "Here's something pleasant. I want to talk about the destruction of the U.S.A."

I've just realized I'm building up a high tolerance now to stories on Fischer. Give me another week and I think I'll start to consider it the most normal thing in the world that a former world chess champion is in prison in Japan.
Since this story involves:
(1) US/Japan relations
(2) Visa problems
(3) Marriage to a Japanese woman
(4) Sex and Asian women
(5) Foreign Crime
...it must rank pretty highly as an archetypical FG story. What are we missing in the mix?

' typical of the once fashion-conscious Fischer '

Bobby really hates that photo. By far, the following report is the best overview written so far on the whole mess.

The Fischer defence
Telegraph, UK / by Andrew Alderson / Sunday 22/08/2004

....Bobby Fischer was deeply unhappy when a press photographer snatched a picture of him as he was being transferred to a new detention centre in Japan this month.

Fischer, the greatest chess player ever, turned virtual recluse, was not worried, however, about being photographed publicly for the first time in many years. Instead, he was concerned by his dishevelled appearance.

"It makes me look like Saddam Hussein," Fischer, 61, told Miyoko Watai, his new fiancee, after the Mainichi Daily News published a "world exclusive" picture of the burly, bearded and greying chess legend dressed in blue jeans, a denim shirt and an open, short-sleeved black jacket.

It was typical of the once fashion-conscious Fischer that, as he languished in detention facing one of the greatest battles of his life, he was troubled by vanity. Even as a teenager, he boasted of owning 17 bespoke suits which he justified by saying: "I don't want to look like a bum."

Fischer, a mass of self-doubt and contradictions, was arrested at Narita Airport on July 13....

Hughes was "unique" but Bobby Fischer sort of reminds me more ofJohn Nash's paranoid delusions about Jews

Just think of the voices in Bobby's brain railing 24/7 while he in solitary zen-like 2-mat padded cell in Japanese jail.

While we are on the subject of Chess...Here are a few Movie Chess cliches...
GOOD Chess players are always portrayed as upper class. (Go to any tournament and see how many rich guys there are there. NONE! They're too busy chasing women and driving fast cars to play chess.)

Chess players in movies are always all around brilliant and charming people. (With very few exceptions, REAL chess players are introverted and so involved with chess they have little time to WASTE pursuing anything as trivial as LOVE, A PROFESSION, or SOCIAL GRACES. Exception: Computers! Most Chess players are, or will become, Computer nurds).

Great Chess players are always honored to play on some rich guy's fancy Philipino Art Set. (In reality, better players are almost always adament about playing on a plain, unadorned wood or plastic "Staunton" set. No red or blue pieces, no ceramic or metal, no elephants for rooks.)

The board is usually set up wrong, with the black square at the players lower right, or with one or both of the King/Queen set up backwards. (WHITE SQUARE GOES ON THE PLAYERS RIGHT. QUEENS on thier own color: white QUEEN on white, black QUEEN on black.)

Supposedly brilliant players usually miss one move checkmates in critical games. This is akin to a professional race car driver backing his station wagon into the garage door.

On the other hand, good players are often portrayed as seeing 15 or 20 moves ahead in detail from a middle game, when there are still many pieces on the board. (One could more easily predict the next president and all 535 congressmen correctly before the election. In the End Game, when the number of pieces is limited, looking ahead often becomes a question of counting moves, who can get to the critical square first, or of very limited numbers of moves, and is more feasible.)

Beginners usually beat experienced players, as a mechanism for showing the neophyte's native brilliance. (This is about as common as a tall, athletic man who's never seen a basketball beating an NBA player in one-on-one. It could happen, if the pro had a really bad day, but who would you bet on?)

Players who are really behind (have lost more pieces) come up with brilliant ways to win anyway. (If they're so good, how did they get behind in the first place?)

13 hours?????????? true???????

QUOTE:

As a journalist accredited with the obscure InterMedia Centre News Agency in Tokyo, Bosnitch said he met Fischer only a few of weeks ago when publicity grew about his arrest. "I volunteered to help him because he was a boyhood hero of mine," he said.

Bosnitch is now shouldering most of the fight, petitioning the UN for help and making inquiries with Germany about citizenship on the strength that Fischer's father was a German. At immigration hearings it was Bosnitch who filibustered his way through deadline after deadline - speaking at his last appearance for 13 hours, and exhausting the judge who adjourned the hearing.

Well, the aspect of sex+chess+women+money course! It's a war out there! Haven't you heard?? A new sweetheart of Bobby was discovered, and here's her sorry tale:

Google search: "... I would have loved to play a Fischer-random match ... the great world champions such as Bobby, Garry and ... will also help raise money for the Susan Polgar Foundation". The lady seems to have removed the "Big Fish" from her money-raising plans...

Yikes it's another Alzheimer's Moment for me! I swear I've seen this photo of Bobby Fischer playing a woman in stories about Miyoko Watai's long romance.
ImageObviously however, from a different shot, the woman in the photo is Susan Polgar.Image

"...I had very good results against Bobby. But the final score is something I would never reveal unless Bobby consents. "
