http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=5716743276#ShippingPayment

It is in nearly new condition, works great, but I have graduated beyond it's functions and need a more robust unit. My wife paid over 20700 yen for it new.

This is targetted at the beginner level Japanese learner. That said, it served me well for it's use. The idiom feature was really handy at times.

Those in Japan will get a hefty shipping discount. :D

BB, how about telling them how big it is.

I bought the Sony DD-IC500S in April for about 18,700 yen and can thoroughly recommend it, but the main point for me was its compact size (7 x 10cm) - it's the one on the left in this photo.

Size : 116(w) x 78(h) x 20(d) mm

Weight : approx. 155g (including batteries)

Battery : AAA x 2pcs.

Battery life : approx. 70hrs. for continuous use

It is not the smallest unit but it is small enough to fit in your pocket. This is a perfect beginner dictionary. THis is made basically for English learners of Japanese. With the English manual, romanji based Japanese look-up and so on, it is perfect for those who are just starting out.

  Nice one.

I only googled the photo but now that I've checked out the website of origin, I'm sure we could become super best friends (otakutachi !) if we ever met - given my own intense style of learning Japanese ...

Image

But for anyone interested in a pocket-size denshijisho (like BB's), they are great for giving your wife/husband/GF/BF/friends/colleagues/people-in-the-street a break from your constant questions like "what was that word again that meant ..." and "what's a ..." or for just playing with when you're waiting for the train, bus, etc. and there's no tachi-yomi opportunities.

Good luck BB

I'm assuming that 2,000 is in US dollars? :D If not, and it is indeed in yen, I think I can let the batteries go for 2000 yen.

Canon Wordtank.....

Postby Akisa » Tue Aug 24, 2004 11:26 am

I bought the Canon wordtank a couple of months ago and I like it. I had a Seiko before this on I liked that too. But the canon has the bookmark feature that comes in handy.

Well, I don't see what's wrong with 2000 as an opening FG bid. I mean, that's how auctions work right, start low and build up?

See 2000 yen is around 6 months subscription for a bigger and better mobile phone based dictionary, phrasebook, kanji searching and much much more.. plus you don't have to carry another gadget around with you...

I just don't understand why people use Electronic dictionaries.. they are limited by memory, bad bad interfaces, batteries and you have to lug them around. I nearly slipped a disk picking up a word tank.

Not vickrey auctions. Those are the evil mastermind type of auctions the bad guys always have in James Bond movies, where each bidder for the superweapon makes one secret bid for what they think its worth and the highest bidder wins, but pays only the amount of the second highest bid. Awesome...

Gomi-chan,

I'll grant you it is lame to carry around another device, but having a QWERTY keyboard is much nicer than a phone keypad for interfaces...

That's what I need, I'm always forgetting the word I need. Can you make it so it displays the Japanese in hiragana only, or kanji with hiragana, you know what I mean, so you don't have to read the kanji?

I guess I am just used to thumb typing.. I don't really notice the difference anymore.

I actually think it is easier to type in Japanese on a keitai than it is to type in English.

depends on your use

Postby omae mona » Tue Aug 24, 2004 3:41 pm

I agree with both sides. I am a huge fan of a certain keitai-accessible service that served me well for many months and was always with me. Great for casual and occasional use. Nothing beats it.

But lately, I have actually been in a bit of a study phase. Just today I sat in a coffee shop banging on my Canon Wordtank G-50 for easily 30 minutes. Couldn't have gotten nearly as much work done on my keitai, given the keypad, download speed, smaller screen, and much more limited dictionaries. (sorry GG.. tangotown has a great database behind it, especially the sex-word-of-the-day, but koujien, kanjigen, kenkyuusha et. al have many decades head start). Also, the packet charges would sure add up. The price I pay: the equivalent of about a decade's worth of TangoTown, and I have to tote my Man Bag with me or have an embarrassing rectangular bulge in my pocket.

Once I pass (or fail) the exam I'm planning on taking, I think I'll be going back to TangoTown. I think anybody planning occasional usage should seriously consider sticking to their keitai due to the convenience and low cost. Dedicated electronic dictionaries are maybe the way to go if you're expecting more heavy-duty usage.
