T-minus 10...

Postby Caustic Saint » Mon Aug 23, 2004 9:00 am

Yes, the day is drawing near. In 10 short days I'll be on the plane and heading off to finally be a real FG. :D

I've got my ticket (Narita instead of Haneda this time, in case it's your turn to arrange the red carpet) and am just about ready to go. There are a couple more boxes to send off some junk to get rid of, but that's pretty much it.

So mark your calendars! Next Thursay (2 Sep.) is the day I'll finally be able to say,

(Details for the "Holy crap, I'm in Tokyo! What do I do now?!?" night of drinking will be coming soon. :spin: )

I have never ever been frisked at Narita.

Then again, I've only arrived in country through there once.

I'll be landing in December for about a month.

I have bad luck when it comes to the customs line in Narita. I always get into the line at around the 45 minute marker. If I didn't have an iPod I would've died of boredom waiting in that damn line.

Kansai airport is a dream for gaijin, I can get off the plane, go through customs, and hop onto the bus to Umeda in less than 10 minutes. I wonder if it's faster to fly to Kansai then take a domestic from there to Narita?

Hey Mr. Sparkle will coming then too. If you're planning to stay, job hunting Dec 7 till Jan 7 is poor in Japan since nobody is sober. This is, it's company bonkai/shinnenkai season and no company hiring is done then.
Refer to Terrie's Job Tips
(Terrie Lloyd is CEO of the Daijob.com employment agency)
]The Right Time to Call

... businesses, and certainly the foreign firms, don't have a set time to hire, there are definitely times when they don't hire.

For example, you would find it difficult to find anyone willing to bring on a new person just before a major holiday period (unless, of course, they're looking for someone to relieve a vacationing employee).

There are 3 holiday periods before which, the recruiting activity in Japan really slows down. These are: firstly, Golden Week...Second, there is Obon... in the middle of August...

Lastly, there is the New Year's break, which is really disruptive. In fact, this period is usually only 3-4 working days long, but for some reason the change of the year knocks almost 6-8 weeks out of the recruiting calendar. Not many companies will hire for the whole month of December and for the first 2-3 weeks of January. In January the reason is understandable, because everyone is out visiting clients and wishing them the best for the New Year (an activity which is a necessary sign of respect for the client). But why no one hires at the beginning of December is not exactly clear - maybe it's something to do with all the Nomikai (drinking bouts) the business managers need to attend with their customers?! Who'd want to conduct interviews with a year-end hangover?

Is it just me or are urban Korean ladies more sophisticated than Japanese? I see them on dramas and shows and they just act and dress more sophisticated.. maybe it's just me needing to go to Korea to see, but from my limited perspective, I think they are...

Anyone care to compare?

I'm not sure exactly what you mean by sophisticated but Japanese are overall far more travelled, less ethnocentric (FG's, I know it's shocking but believe it) and far more likely to know a thing or two about jazz or other Western music. I don't know about fashion but if you think Japanese are shallow (and you'd be right) Koreans really got nothing beneath the surface. BB if you ever lived there you'd see what I mean. Koreans are stuck in the 1930's. I mean, sometimes the Asian thirdworld shit vibe rubs off on Japan but in Korea it's the real deal. It's like Mexico without the fun or China without the spark. Just thank God you got a J-wife and live here and not there because Japan is superior in every way.

Having been to Korea, I can confirm that women's fashion is really a non-fashion. Girls seem to specialise in looking dowdy. Just hideous.

The dramas on TV do not reflect what you see on the streets or on the subway. I guess it is similar to how people living in Santa Barbara don't look and dress like "The Bold and the Beautiful"

I know what you mean.

It does seem that way. I think Korean gals are better at putting about airs that they are sophisticated.
Koreans are certainly not as anal as Japanese girls. I will allow you to analize how sophisticated they are in comparison.
I do think that a Korean girl that has spent some time in Japan (as opposed to the US only) is a good balance.

But for Koreans sometimes it is that less sophisticatedness that is easier to get along with.

oh... and When I was in Santa Barbara nobody looked like that. ...well maybe they did

I'm in the checkin line at Incheon rigtht now. Holy crap, is it long! Good thing I got here extra-early Now if I can just get checked in without them hassling me about the weight of my bags. (I think having my Xbox in a carry-on may cause some confusion, though....)

Thanks!

Hopefully the flight (boarding in 15 minutes) will go smoother than check-in did. Anybody know when they started tweaking the rules for weight allowances? Every time I've flown before it was 30kg per bag. Asiana's cheap and only let you get 20kg per bag if you're in economy.

At least, that's what they used to do.

I show up this morning and it's 20kg total! WTF?!?

My two bags are about 60kg combined, but they generously allow me an extra 10kg. So I've got to pay the overweight fee on the next 30kg. There goes $133.

Seriously, how the hell do they think people are going to be traveling internationally and only taking 20 kilos of stuff with them? It's not like I was just jetting over to Tokyo for the weekend. If I were doing that, I wouldn't even have to check any bags at all. ;)

Fuck it. It's over and done with. I don't plan on flying anywhere else anytime soon anyways.

I also had to make a side trip to immigration since I was one day over my visa. No big hassle there, just sign a form and I'm on my way.

It has always been 20kg total.

You can usually squeeze that up to 30 kg total if you are sweet to the check in people.
