Where is my service pack 2??

Postby sirwanksalot » Tue Aug 24, 2004 11:47 pm

I've changed my settings to allow automatic updates a week ago.

Where is it?

Has anyone gotten it? Any complaints, comments, or knowhow to spread?

Mine Finally downloaded last night. Gave me a tease download last week, but I think that was more of a test to see which aspects I still needed.

Be warned it's a big one, (75-100MBs)

DN you must have had a "beta" version if you've had it for 4 months. Microsoft has put off releasing the full version off and on for a month b/c it kept running into conflicts. And you can't just "download it" from the sight. They aren't offering it on their Update center, only rolls out for "auto" updates, and they dictate the schedule (my guess is it's a method to combat Pirate copies). They say they'll offer a free CD of the update in "6-12 months"

Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) provides new proactive security technologies for Windows XP to better defend against viruses, worms, and hackers. In addition to a more robust security infrastructure, SP2 improves the security configuration options of Windows XP and provides better security information to help users faced with security decisions.

NOTE: the Network Install option is recommended if you want to backup the complete Service Pack for future installations, i.e following a reformat.

Oh yeah and you might want to shut off any Firewalls or Spyware Protects you have on while you are downloading and installing it. Caused a few of mine to totally flip out due to registry changes and such. Alot of it is redundant if you have 3rd party software too (pop up blockers, firewalls's, etc) but haven't found any problem spots since the update yet (though my Windows media player icon has mysteriously disappeared :? ) Will post any problems I run into that can't be easily run around.

Anyone that hasn't gotten through Auto Updates yet is better off Going and getting it themselves

The Redmond, Wash.-based software maker completed work on the update, called Service Pack 2, in early August. But Greg Sullivan, a Microsoft lead product manager, said that a "relatively small percentage" of users have received the update so far, mainly through an automatic download service.

Microsoft is expecting to gradually increase the rate of distribution through automatic updates, with most receiving it within TWO months.

The Windows SP2 started propogating in my offices yesterday. Its antivirus and firewall obviously screwed up the networked LAN translation program called "TRADOS" for those people who don't know how to make a "exclusion rule" for SP2's firewall and antivirus features.

I'll be handholding the translation ladies as they reset their Windows SP2 perference files for the next week or two.
I declare Windows SP2 as the best nampa tool Microsoft has invented. :love2:

Nice to know, we have Trados here but these machines haven't been updated yet. Waiting for some customers to call who use Hummingbird on our really old installations as I know it's going to bring up bells and whistles on SP2.
Unfortunately dealing with grumpy old factory boys isn't as much fun as chatting with the OL's. Will mean more trips out of the office but. Most of them have cuties at the front desk....

Windows SP advice

Postby canman » Mon Sep 27, 2004 9:08 am

I got the cdrom in the mail and I am contemplating installing it, but now that I have read about some of the problems, can you please give me some advice as to what I should do before I install the program. Many people have said shut down any spyware programs and firewalls, anything else. And how exactly does one go about shutting down a firewall, the spyware I think should be fairly easy. Anyway thanks for the help.
