Mainichi Shimbun, Japan - June 27
A preventive vaccine against the West Nile virus has been successfully produced by a group of Japanese researchers based at Nagasaki University... researchers at the university created the vaccine by applying the same techniques used to produce the vaccine for Japanese encephalitis, whose harmful pathogens are similar to those of the West Nile virus.
About 80 percent of the amino acids in these pathogens are the same. The vaccine for Japanese encephalitis was developed in Japan in 1954. ...

Wasn't there a case reported in Okinawa a few weeks ago?
Seems like someone traveled to the US and was the target of a infected mosquito.

Yep. My home in Colorado is ground zero for West Nile mosquitoes and the race track north of Commerce City where I road test my cars is the zone having the largest number of deaths. :(

No big deal. Used to live in Singapore and Malaysia, spent time in Thailand.
Dengue, Malaria and that other one that causes a real high fever that kills old folks and kids.
I think beer is a natural combatant to malaria.

On another note, anyone been vaccinated against Japanese encephalitis?

I seem to be spending a lot of time in the rice fields lately...
