Suuuuuure your real name is Brad F. Smith. And my real name is Porky Pig. Maybe I am a coward, but I thought the conventional wisdom was that it's safer to hide one's identity when online. Regardless, I think that maintaining anonymity allows greater freedom to express how I feel with fewer inhibitions.

By the way, I don't know where Ultra is. My guess is that he had to take a trip out of town for a while and still doesn't have a laptop that he can use to log in. Things sure slow down when he's not around.

As much as I hate to admit it - I do agree with Kamome on this subject at least...

I just don't want people who I meet or do business with to prejudge me for what I express/have expressed on-line. This is not because I say things that I don't mean - it is exactly the opposite - I say things that I DO mean and some people may not like it.

At work you are always on your best behaviour - especially with clients, but there is a necessary release and a freedom with raw and truthful or even silly and mischievous pontifications. Sometimes even things that friends and family may not understand.

Also it is cheaper than therapy....

Nope, this would apply no matter where I lived. It's not a matter of honne/tatemae, which is a deep-rooted Japanese psychological characteristic that goes beyond mere inhibited language in public. Some people might not feel inhibited in what they say publically, but I sure do depending on the situation.

I can't speak for the collective Japanese psyche - I haven't actually thought about it that much.

Just that for myself, I have learnt to be careful with what I say and to whom at all times - I think one factor is being a female manager in a male oriented industry (well before I even came to Japan). It is a slippery slope for gals like me and there are people all around who would trip you up if they could... so you learn self preservation politics very quickly. I know that sounds defeatist but from first hand experience it is a necessary evil. People will use whatever they can against you... even if you would never dream of behaving badly in reciprocal or even in anticipation of the reciprocal.

This is not paranoia... it is just that everybody is out to get me!! (kidding)
