Anyone tried any Japanese hair dye?

Postby prancer » Tue Aug 31, 2004 7:05 pm

I heard it can dry out western hair, but I am seeking a color change. Does anybody have any experiences to share?
BTW< I am in the boondocks of Yamaguchi, so I am not sure if going somewhere that sells American products is an option for me.

What color do you want to go? I would think anything darker would be no problem. I do know that American Hair color seldom works on Asian hair, so I would think the product would be really strong like granma used to use. Japanese hair is very thick and coarse. (That why Japanese men can get away with comb-overs :-)

Andocrates, I want to go lighter. My natural color is dark brown and I want to go closer to light brown. One of my J girlfriends helped me take an informal survey of a bunch of J men in a drugstore, asking them "what color should I dye my hair?" They all pointed to the lightest blonde color on the shelf. I'm not quite ready for that, but I got the message.

Please don't call me frivolous for this. I'm not trying to express anything about myself by changing my haircolor. I WOULD like to find a good man and make him happy. If spending 30 minutes with dye on my head will help me do that, than why the hell not?

I just want to make sure I don't fry my hair so bad I end up bald. :?

PERFECT!! You are a lifesaver!! :) I saved that link.

BTW, I have a related question, but I don't want to start a whole thread on it. What is this "henna" gaijin thing I keep hearing references to? I'm new to these forums.

I doubt anybody knows more about Japanese hair dye than Steven Schultz. Of course, he tends to go for blue/green/red/yellow/whathaveyou, but I'm sure he'd be a good person to ask even if you don't want something that extreme.

Do not buy Japanese products to use on your hair if you have fine caucasian hair. You wil regret it.

All of my hair colour comes from US, Australia or UK depending on where I have been so I can bring it back - if I do it myself. Otherwise, I have it professionally coloured - preferably by a foreign stylist or at least somebody that has trained overseas. It does cost a bit more but you will get better results and also learn what you need to know about caring for treated hair.

Like it or not, Asian hair is very different to Caucasian hair and so must have the correct treatments - especially when colouring.

If you don't believe me, check out the overprocessed straw-like hair of the gyaru's or gangaro's... it is NOT attractive.

Although let me add that I have used Japanese hair dye and haven't got straw yet - but be prepared to do lots of hair treatments to keep it from drying out as (especially bleach) is pretty strong. Also keep in mind that any hair colouring has some bleach in it. You can also leave it on for less time than recommended.

Oh and be careful of pink colours. I loved having pink hair but the fact that it keeps washing out gradually for days was a pain. Pink sweat dribbles are not fun.

2 things:

1) Mmmmm, pink hair. *lust*

and

2) Andocrates, I need your address. I am sending you a large ziploc baggie. It contains my dinner, which had resided within me for all of about 10 minutes before I saw the image you posted. :puke:

bad hair life

Postby khusam » Wed Sep 01, 2004 2:18 pm

Prancer, is your hair fine or especially long? You might not be happy about what Japanese dye does to it... and you may end up having to cut it off.

I use very dark dye, but the Japanese products were smelly and dried my hair out... and made it frizzy. Going lighter will be worse.

If your hair isn`t especially `valuable` to you, go for it. Just buy a ton of conditioning treatment...

I found Mod`s Hair dye is good for my hair. Unfortunately, it also gives me an attractively puffy blotchy itchy face for a week or so after.

(Don`t skip the allergy test here! Even with brands you`re familiar with!)

I heard that LUCK has a lot to do with it too, from what I can remember of yourstories of Adventures-in--Amateur-Hair-Styling
I thought I could find those hair dye photos of you, but all I found was "Naked Boy with hair full of dye watches TV to pass the time."

No offense intended at all.
I just meant to give you a warning about the potential for disaster of using Japanese hair dye.

Hey Prancer

I love J hair dye cos it doesn't fade as fast as the stuff back home. I use dark colours. Do you have a Matsumotokiyoshi drug store near you? They sell foreign stuff. If you are going lighter tho, do the strand test - you probably should reduce the waiting time significantly.

I haven't heard of that drugstore, but I'll ask around. And after reading everything on this thread, I'll definitely do a strand test. Thanks for you advice.
