Trying to find English listings for Japanese TV

Postby canman » Fri Aug 30, 2002 8:46 pm

Help to all of you F*cked Gaijins out there. I am trying to find somewhere, either on line or in print, some type of listing so I can know what the hell is coming on my tv. I used to get the Japan Times, but when the went to their new format, we here in the boonies(Aomori-ken) were getting three day old news. Anyway if anybody has any information I would greatly appreciate it. Also could anyone tell me why Wowow would broadcast the US open and only have Japanese play by play? If you try to switch to English you get these lovely whale sounds.
Thanks a lot!!! :D

The shows listed are the ones only in English.

Hope this helps.

Why, you say?

This is one of the great mysteries that defies any answer that makes sense. Like its so hard to leave the original sound on the broadcast?

Annoys the shit out of me. Like flying with JAL from Paris to Tokyo and getting an American flick with 3 languages and no English, duh! Or renting a DVD that has Swahili , Hebrew, and every other commonly spoken Language, but no English. Double Duhhh!

Good luck finding a TV guide, you`ll need it

The Metropolis guide is always incomplete and often wrong - but better than nothing. I agree that this would be useful... how about some enterprising FG make an i-mode/j-sky site for this - I would be happy to pay for it...

So true

I usually use the Japanese TV Guide, online:

http://www.tvguide.or.jp/

It's all in Japanese, though. Maybe good for studying? It's fairly easy to navigate, even with my limited Japanese.

I appreciate your posts, and I will try and use these sites. But what really bugs me is the fact that Fox Japan, an Australian/US company refuses to put any English on its web site. I guess I can understand WOWOW, what it being a Japanese company(even though most of the shows it broadcasts are English programs), but to not even get a small explanation of what is coming up on their channel, it seems like they are paying a disservice to all the non-Japanese speaking customers out there. Anyway, I guess there is only one thing to do, stop putting off those Japanese language classes.

Completely off topic...

The english speaking population are such a small percentage of the population that companies feel it is not worth the trouble as they will not gain extra revenue... this is a fact of life and business...

This is life as a minority!! Overlooked and not considered... It is a rude shock to many people who have grown up in a country where they were in the majority and so all care and consideration is paid by all service providors.... it is the little things that we notice so we get used to it and complain when we don't get it as we feel it is our right...

So there are life lessons to be learnt from the experience of living as a minority - albeit a quasi experience... think of the minority groups in the countries where you grew up and now you can walk a mile in their shoes - it aint fun so I hope you can appreciate why people protest so hard to gain equal status, equal consideration...

Its strange you know I grew up an Anglophone in Quebec, which means I was always the alien, although not to the extent that I am here. But there it worked for me, as it does here. I guess I got kind of special treatment back in Canada, whereas others didn't or never would. But what I find difficult is that even though you and I are a minority, we aren't that insignificant that we should be ignored. And I think companies that do are losing out. Or at least I hope they are. I thought that as things got more wired and hi-tech, that these small inconvenience, (and lets admit not being able to read whats coming on the telly is only a minor inconveneince in the whole shcelem of things) would disappear, but they still exist. Sorry this is a rather strange post kind of a soul bearing one, I apologize beforehand for its weirdness. :crazy3:
