3rd Japanese Apple Store Coming to Nagoya

Postby Steve Bildermann » Mon Aug 30, 2004 7:21 am

Apple is now hiring in advance for an Apple Store in Nagoya, Japan. This will mark the third retail store that Apple will open in Japan, adding to a store in Tokyo and a store that will open later this month in Osaka.

Nagoya is one of the largest cities in Japan with more than 2 million people in Nagoya proper, and a few million more in surrounding suburbs and adjoining cities. and me :D

In March of 2002, TMO published some photos from a multi-story Mac store in Nagoya called MacMasters.

-Secondly, when the hell is japan going to move on the itunes music store in japan? I mean it sort of defeats the purpose of having an ipod only being able to convert your cd collection ONLY for it.

Huh? An iPod works perfectly fine without the iTunes Music Store. What do you think people were using them for before the iTMS launched in the US?

If you are really hungry for iTMS here in Japan you can sign a petition at

iTunes Japan hits 'inadequate DRM' roadblock

The Register, UK - 8 Sept
Apple's plan to open a Japanese version of its iTunes Music Store could be scuppered on local music companies' fears that its DRM technology, FairPlay, simply isn't restrictive enough.
Pricing is also an issue, it seems, with labels fearing the cannibalisation of CD sales, a report in Japan's Asahi Shimbun newspaper claims.
According to the report, ITMS Japan has met with opposition from a number of local music labels who claim that FairPlay is "inadequate" and are thus refusing to license their songs to Apple.
At issue is the Mac maker's insistence that consumer should be allowed to burn downloaded songs to CD, a facility offered by the US, UK, German and France versions of ITMS.. ...

-I know it works fine without using the apple music store, what I'm saying is that I want to buy music from the apple music store, but there is NO iTMS here in japan, and there is NO service to users abroad unless you have a card originating from the US or a Stateside billing address. SO, no music unless you burn what you have on CD to Mp3 and on to the iPod.
As this sucks, it defeats being able to buy new music to put on it, and so on. As for the use, simply it works fine.

Taro

Bah! -What a shame, sounds like the initial resistance to DSL here when it first started coming out. Too many hands minding the cookie jar affraid of loosing money (in CD sales and concerns for piracy).

Well, as Taro pointed out a few posts up, the holdup in Japan is due to the Japanese music industry, not Apple.

For an alternative way to use the music store, you can have somebody who does have access to it buy you a gift certificate, which you then pay them back for. Not the best solution, but it works just fine for those in a country not served by iTMS directly.

Although this is the reasoning being thrown around in the press, it would not surprise me at all to find out the real reason is protecting the very lucrtative CD rental market here.

People who buy CDs will continue to buy the ones they really want. But something like iTunes would really hurt Tsutaya et al. Instead of the hassle of renting a CD, copying it, returning it, maybe paying late fees... Just download the songs you want and burn to CD or use in your iPod.
