Australian embassy in Jakarta attacked

Postby cstaylor » Thu Sep 09, 2004 4:15 pm

At Least 7 Killed in Blast Outside Australian Embassy in Jakarta
A powerful bomb exploded near the Australian Embassy in Jakarta on Thursday, killing seven people and wounding nearly 100, witnesses and police said.

No one inside the heavily fortified embassy was seriously hurt in the blast, said Lyndall Sachs, a spokeswoman for the Australian foreign ministry in Canberra. Four cars, including a police vehicle, were damaged, and a section of the embassy's high metal perimeter fence was flattened. The windows on several high-rise buildings nearby were smashed.

I went there before 911, and the place was already a fort Knox.

Payback over East Timor methinks.... the Islamic extremists weren't too happy that somebody put an end to their Christian-killing rampage.

Damn, I was in Jakarta a few weeks ago. Good thing my wife finished her work there last week.

The last thing that poor city needs is another attack similar to the Bali bombings. The people people there were very nice and quite sociable with me.

I didn't know that the Indonesian militants had such a hard-on for the Australians. I was kind of hoping that the bombers mistook the Australian clubbers for Americans. I hate to see another country get caught up in hatefest my country is in.

Eight killed in embassy bombing
September 9, 2004 - 6:27PM The Age

Political leaders rushed to condemn a bombing outside the Australian embassy in Jakarta today that killed at least eight people and left dozens injured.
Prime Minister John Howard said Australia would not be intimidated by terrorism after the car bomb explosion.
Mr Howard said he did not believe Australia was now at more risk of a terror attack.
"I have no advice to revise up the security risk in Australia," he said.

Opposition Leader Mark Lathan said terrorists who bombed the Australian embassy in Jakarta were evil and barbaric and must be hunted down.
"The news that the embassy staff, the Australian embassy staff, have been accounted for is obviously good, it's encouraging," he said.
"It's been a serious incident. The size of the bomb and the crater is obviously of concern and we'll have to wait for the fuller details as the matter is investigated in full."
Never underestimate the power of very stupid people in large groups.

The long and short of it is that the militants have a hard on for anyone who isn't muslim, and an extra special hard-on for any country that they think the Jews have in their pocket.

Most people in Indonesia I met were warm and friendly... but I do know that there are also a large number of fanatics out there who have no qualms about making up a bunch of inflammatory lies about western countries to vent their own insecurities, and refusing to deal with people because they are not Muslims. Even before 911, there were Muslims going around saying that they were "under attack" from christians, Jews, and the west.... (although I fail to see how)

Australia cops it because we quelled a rioting anti-Christian military threatening to destabilize a new independant East Timor, and in their minds, the Jews and the US run the country.
I've spoken to East Timorese, and their main reason for breaking off from Indonesia was the religious violence from the Indonesian Muslims.

There are occasional religious riots in Indonesia. You know... some muslim goes into a church on Sunday, gets the bible, pees on it, and then everybody forms a lynch mob. Or a muslim just throws a bomb into church... or starts a fire in a buddhist temple. These kinds of things.

Al Queda or one of Jemaah Islamiah or one of their offshoots are most likely responsible for the religious riots in Ambon.
After Suharto left the building, it's not uncommon for rumours and lies to spread about Muslims rioting in Christian areas at a set time and date. I went there in 1999 and it's quite simply ridiculous.

In a country where religion is the opiates of the masses (and not opiates being the religion of the masses), just about everybody cops it. The West for being Christian and "under Jewsih control". The Chinese for running a huge share of the country's economy, and for being communists.
I mean... this is a country which forces every citizen to have an ID card with religion clearly stated.... and no "athiesm" and "agnosticism" isn't a state religion... so you can't put that in, so sorry.

and people wonder why we have strict border controls on our seas...then when they try to enter illegally via fishing boats etc people get outraged when we detain them until we know who they r...doesnt always work but we dont want to end up like the US.

They do, believe it they do. I read the report that was submitted to parliment by ONA and ASIO, scary stuff really... New Zealand is also a target according to that report and is used as an entry point into AUS.

They didnt mistake us for Americans, how stupid can they be..The Australian to American Ratio in Bali must be something like 100/1..

Video link here (wm)

Disturbing scenes including little johhny's head. Looking at the damage of the opposite building, not exactly a box of firecrackers.
