Pongis Jedi Glow = V Cool

Postby emperor » Thu Mar 11, 2004 4:27 am

Whats the deal with the glowing suit Mr.Sparkle?

Did you use special lights while filming or post-production for that?

I suspect it's a bit of Final Cut Pro wizardry.

Or maybe it's just that natural Pongi Magic? 8O

It's all about the natural Pongi magic!

Well, CS is right--it is that and a technique called "selective color correction" with the Color Corrector in Apple Final Cut Pro. Absolutely no special lighting takes place - just rob's camcorder light. Cool eh? 8)

Image

Essentially you eyedropper on a color, or brightness range to control. Once you've defined the area (a white Elvis suit), you can do crazy krapola with the color. If you make the selection fuzzy, you can make the pongi glow. This technique is actually written about in my new book - Motion Graphics and Effects in Final Cut Pro.

I also affected the background as well. So two things with color are going on. The suit and the background. Pretty kooky fun!

As Rob would say, "Ah Doooomo, Gestalt-san!". "San-Q Big Bogger-san" Thanks everyone.

Rob's practice session actually goes on for about 6 minutes. The raw footage is so freakin' funny with all the costume changes - and "Burn Baby Burn! Disco Inferno!" in the Bill Murray stylee over and over and over--poses and all. The jump cuts were meant to show that he was doing the "strike a pose" thing for a LOT longer than was shown.

Big Booger wrote:I won't be getting that "Celebrate" song out of my head for a long time...

You think you've got it bad. I harmonize with the pongster and the young gal he duets with.

Big Booger wrote:LOL Rob you are a pioneer my friend, a pioneer.

It's pretty much vintage Pongi. This is when Rob really hit his stride and the superman suit became more refined - and the hideout played rob's tapes. Hey, do they still play the pongi at the hideout?

Not only have you been healed - but the PONGI has entered your subconciousness, subsuming your id.

--uh, sorry-- :crazy3:

tokyo joe wrote:Aaaaaah buwahahahaha!!!

Were you there that night Tokyo Joe? Did you tape it? This is Pre-Pongi era for me. Don't laugh too hard, you're in some o' them vintage Pongi tapes.

tokyo joe wrote:Make it stop, make it stop!!

Now TJ! As Rob says, "The Pongi Army will NOT be stopped!.

(you know that dude)

I'll make some more vids when I have the time. I'd love to come back to Tokyo to make more videos with Rob. He does have hundreds of hours of footage like this, believe it or not. It's crazy --

Dang, if I could make a living at it, I'd make Pongi videos all day!

Just for fun...

Can anyone translate rob's japanese at the beginning of the video? :?:

Kon ban wa?
[good evening]

Kyo wa ano Halloween no junbi no hi desu kedo.
[Today is--uh--Halloween--??]

Hai! Ikaga desho ka!
[Yes..?]

Hodo mitte...
[?]

Chotto matte...
[Just a minute]

Dou desu ka?
[How do you like it?]

I can't speak Japanese. I wanna want to pick it up again though. I sorta dabbled in about '96.

Forgot most of the stuff though.

Here's where I went: Soko Gakuen

Good people there. We have a nice Japantown here in SF. Sushi boats - Kinokuniya - Ramen - the whole deal. It's across the street from the Fillmore, so after rockin' out you can go slurp Ramen. Cool...8)
