Coping with inane opinions about westerners?

I think you just don't respect your self as a professional or your time enough. You are there as a professional english teacher, period. Your class starts at a certain time and you have to prepare until that time. You should make it clear that you are unavailable until class time and not available after class time, that you are the expert on English and if your student wants to teach other people wrong things about America or English, than he should have his own class.

I think the problem Prancer was having was that she(?) was preparing until the class began, but then loser boy would be the only one who showed up on time. The others all came late. She couldn't stay in the class and wait until the others showed up as the loser guy did pay for his lessons, albeit he wanted to do the teaching not learning.
But Prancer I'm glad to hear you are dealing with the guy, in your own way. BTW do you ever go out with your students after class. Why not organize something like that, of course don't invite the nutter, and after a few libations ask the other students "gently of course" how they feel about this guy. That may be the ammunition you need to get rid of him, or shuffle him off to Buffalo.

Thank you canman. I saw that ridiculous post and chose to ignore it. Anyway, I should mention that this is a conversation class - not a class where I lecture and the students listen. They are in that class in part because they want to talk, not just to listen. Nutter keeps his wacky ideas to himself once they arrive - it's only during the time before they walk in late that I am subjected to his bizarre racial theories.
Yes, I've gone out with the other students a few times. It always works the same way: one of them will invite me to do something, and when I go, the rest of them (minus nutter) will be there. I KNOW they don't like him.
I don't think he'll ever quit the class, and a contract is a contract - my boss wouldn't take kindly to any suggestion that he be shuffled out, and would probably question me if he decided to quit - I think he's been in this class for years and years.

Still, I've managed to curb most of his obnoxious behaviors during class - mainly by encouraging the other students to talk as much as possible and focusing all of my attention on them. I think the less he is involved in the class the happier the other students will be.

Anyway, since he is intimidated by the fear that the other students are "laughing in their heads at him" - as he put it, when he talks, does anybody have any suggestions as to how I can feed (gently) into this paranoia?

Don`t believe japanese don`t have opinions etc, just a different time and way of expressing them...in many occasions they dont realize how rude they are, social skills are often left wanting.

sterotypes exist in every country but i think they are allowed to grow unchecked in japan as they are more or less brainwashed by the fucked up media bias..BS TV shows, etc.(and many J`s are VERY naive)

the other students won`t know where they are from you could say they were newspaper letters!! debate the "value"and accuracy of these comments...chances are non-nutter students will kick the shit out of ridiculous claims(alien hands for chopsticks etc).

make sure the students JUSTIFY their points...not just opinion.
the nutter will be unlikely to try and defend them (he would stand out as a dickhead) but will well know where they came from..or are similar to

mostly have fun.

pretty good advice. my mate who is a teacher does the same thing with the names. sounds like good fun.
