U.S. proposes beef exports to Japan under conditions
The United States has proposed in informal talks on beef trade that Japan lift its ban on imports of U.S. beef, saying it will accept a condition set by Tokyo for removing the ban, negotiation sources said Monday.

Does anybody else think that they will finally push beef exports to Japan thru just before the election?
If I may be permitted to make a predictions it is that bush is saving this as feel good -- carry it over the top -- right before the election news.

If negotiators wanted to push this thru they could have done it long ago I believe with the right combination of testing and Quality Control.
The revenue from Beef Exports to Japan as a portion of GNP is extremely significant. by no means a measly figure.

It is a nice try, but consider the fact that most of the beef states are so staunchly Republican it is likely to have a negligable effect on the voting.

Canadian beef is still banned from being exported to the U.S. so they've still got the lack of that source to make up for any losses they incur from not being able to export to Japan.
