Quick Romaji look-up for browsing the web

Postby Narujiro » Mon Sep 23, 2002 9:43 am

Ever been looking at a Japanese website, and need to quickly look up a word? Happens to me all the time...

If you're using IE, here's a cool link that will facilitate the above need :)

javascript{void(term=prompt('Enter ROMAJI Japanese word:',''))}if(term)javascript{window.open('http://www.solon.org/cgi-bin/j-e/sjis/dosearch?sDict=on&H=PS&L=J&T='+escape(term)+'&WC=none',"CtrlWindow","toolbar=yes,menubar=yes,location=yes,scrollbars=yes,resizable=yes,status=yes");}window.height=window.height

First, make a new Favorite. Next, go to your new Favorite entry, and right-click on it to edit its Properties. Now, simply cut&paste the above code into the url field. IE may give you an error about java-script protocol... but don't worry, it should still work.

Now, when you click your new Favorite, it'll bring up a dialog-box asking for a word in romaji... and then pop-up a window with the definition (if it exists)!

I just used it for "Maezumo"... which is aparently my ranking on this board... heheh ;) Anyways, enjoy! I hope you'll find it as useful as I have...

Hey, that sounds pretty cool! Thanks..

I tend to use this online dictionary a lot:

http://linear.mv.com/cgi-bin/j-e/dict

It's not pretty, but works fairly well..

Babelfish is nice for a variety of languages. I like checkin' out what the Germans are saying  :

You can translate individual phrases, or a whole website. Although it's a very rough translation..

Yeah, the code in that Javascript basically just opens up a new window to that Japanese dictionary website link you posted... only it's a different mirror. :) I use it all the time... it's great for looking up kanji, because you can just cut and paste it into the search field.

Also, if you ever find youself needing to look up a word that's in English... like, I dunno, the word pendantic... you can use this code the same way you use the above code:

Merriam Webster's site
javascript{void(term=prompt('Enter a word for m-w.com:',''))}if(term)javascript{window.open('http://www.m-w.com/cgi-bin/dictionary?book=Dictionary&va='+escape(term)+'',"CtrlWindow","toolbar=yes,menubar=yes,location=yes,scrollbars=yes,resizable=yes,status=yes");}window.height=window.height

Dictionary.com's site
javascript{void(term=prompt('Enter a word for Dictionary.com:',''))}if(term)javascript{window.open('http://www.dictionary.com/cgi-bin/dict.pl?term='+escape(term)+'&r=1',"CtrlWindow","toolbar=yes,menubar=yes,location=yes,scrollbars=yes,resizable=yes,status=yes");}window.height=window.height

Anyway, 90% the same code, just a variation of the url :)

And yeah, babel works ok sometimes :) But I'd hate to have to try to translate a site using babel if I didn't already know some Japanese :( One of my college professors was just telling me the other day how babel didn't work to well for him when he went to look on a website about a japanese bicycle he purchased... he said something along the lines of "Yeah, my bike doesn't really come with any sea-urchins, so I'm not exactly sure WHAT babel was translating..."

Heheh :)
