Asashoryu looking to run table

NAGOYA (Kyodo) Mongolian grand champion Asashoryu is hungrier than ever and has set his sights on capturing all six Emperor's Cup titles this year.
The 23-year-old yokozuna said, a day after claiming his fourth consecutive title since the New Year meet on Sunday, that he is not happy with the way he wrestled at the 15-day meet at Aichi Prefectural Gymnasium despite bringing home his eighth overall title.

"I'm not satisfied with this meet. I was missing something. This year, I want to win all the tournaments," Asashoryu said at a press conference on Monday.

Such a feat would be unprecedented as no wrestler has ever claimed all six titles in a year. But Asashoryu is warning the competition that his wrath will only continue.

"I want to test the wrestlers who seem to hold a future and create rivalries with them. The next meet (in September in Tokyo) is going to be an exciting one. I won't lose easily," he said.

He's no more talented than the other wrestlers; he just wants to win more than they do.

Same goes for Kokkai. Wrestlers from impoverished regions like Mongolia and Eastern Europe see big money in Sumo, so it's more of a conscious choice to take the plunge: I don't think many Japanese kids join Sumo for the money.

I guess if the Japanese want to return to Japanese-only sumo, they'll have to reduce the salaries of the pro ranks enough to make it unpalatable for foreign wrestlers. Otherwise they'll just see an increase of foreign wrestlers from third-world countries (the eastern europe invasion has just begun).

Asashoryu loses his fourth(?) in a row to Kaio who took the Emperor's Cup and the Fall Basho this afternoon!

Sumo: Ozeki Kaio wins autumn sumo, beats Asashoryu on final day
TOKYO Sept. 26 Kyodo - Veteran ozeki Kaio outmuscled archrival Asashoryu on Sunday as he won the Autumn Grand Sumo Tournament for the fifth Emperor's Cup of his career and first in seven tournaments.

After the loss of No. 3 maegashira Tochinonada, the only other wrestler in contention, gave Kaio the championship, the 32-year-old shoved Asashoryu out of the ring in the final bout and finished the 15-day meet at Ryogoku Kokugikan with a 13-2 record.

Yeah, not a great showing for him. So much for winning all 6 in one year.

Well, I had nothing to do with it. My father-in-law is a supporter of Kaio's stable, so I was very fortunate to be invited for the celebration.

I did get to see Asashoryu interviewed. I never knew where they held the interviews until yesterday.

YAY!!! How cool is that!!! I was thinking about you the other day when I was watching Kaio make mince meat outa his opponents. He has done really really well lately - the next Yokozuna??? He wasn't wearing the Nanshuu apron (sic*) though. :(

BTW did you see the flashing apron one of the guys was wearing the other day? I predict many more aprons will be battery operated from now on. It looked so cool. But I guess it needed a touch panel with a fingerprint scanner though!!

*I couldn't be bothered looking up the proper name for the apron thingies. My fave bit is where they lift up their skirts in unison.

Well, he has a lot of them from various supporters. Some of the wrestlers are superstitious, where if they lose several times wearing the same keshomawashii, they won't wear them when they expect to win. Bad luck for the sponsor.

I hope he makes the next Yokozuna... my father-in-law has been a supporter since the current oyakata (stablemaster) was wrestling, so for Kaio to become a Yokozuna would be very cool.

Nah, after losing three times, there's no way they'd give him the promotion. I just can't believe he lost to Miyabiyama... that guy should have been an easy win. :x

Speaking of losing three times, a tough break for your man

http://www.japantimes.co.jp/sumo.htm

Kaio's hopes die with third loss

The Associated Press
Tosanoumi upset Kaio at the New Year Grand Sumo Tournament on Wednesday, dashing any hope the ozeki wrestler had for promotion to sumo's highest rank.

Touted as a candidate for promotion to yokozuna before the start of the 15-day meet at Ryogoku Kokugikan, Kaio is now struggling just to survive another day.

To tell the truth though, I didn't want to see him promoted without winning the back-to-back bashos. No hard feelings.

Yeah, he's going to catch hell at the post-game party. I'll snap some photos if you want.

That would be best, but IIRC Asashoryu made Yokozuna without defeating a single Ozeki (everyone was out with injuries).

Please do. I think everyone should try to put original pics up using the image uploads service. Nothing against using preexisting web pictures (I do it all the time) just original stuff is obviously better for the site.

I didn't realize that. That's a good factoid. Thanks for the info. None-the-less an athlete hardly deserves to be held back because of the inadequacies of his or her opponents. Mumbles 'Fucking college football' You either win or lose other factors are just BULLSHIT

I think if Asashoryu had faced some trouble with the Ozekis when they returned from their injuries, it would have looked bad for him, but he's done a good job recently, so I don't think anyone could accuse him of being a poor wrestler.

I would like to see blows to the face banned from Sumo... it makes for poor sport and gives wrestlers an easy way to tug on the hair. If they did that, wrestlers like Chiyotaikai would drop in rank immediately.

I don't think there's anything he can do to change fans minds, so I think he's doing the best he can: collect as much cash as possible. When he eventually returns to Mongolia, he will be set for life.

8O I can't agree with that. The best thing about sumo is how violent it is.

Chiyotaikai

What do you have against Chiyotaikai?

I don't think there's anything he can do to change fans minds,
Huh? I don't think any honest sumo fan could think anyone comes close to Asashoryu these days. They may not like it but those are the lumps.

he will be set for life.

Hopefully. I don't want to watch him making a buffoon of himself on K-1 like Akebono.

Hey, do you know if there's any good book about gaijin sumos (like You Gotta Have Wa) or even a good book about sumo in general?

I like Kaio, think he's a good wrestler.

But I really have to wonder: If Kaio was the sole Yokozuna right now and Asashoryu was the struggling Ozeki... Does anyone actually think that the Sumo Association would be even considering promoting him?

To me it stinks of wanting a Japanese Yokozuna.

I don't see anything wrong with the stuff Konishiki's doing.

Well you don't need a Ph.D. in Niponomics from Waseda to figure that out.

One thing that has been bothering me about sumo lately is that fans have such a hard on for throwing their zabuton onto the dojo. They do it for no damn reason.
