Japanese work ethic hides inefficiencies

Working practices at companies such as Toyota, which reported record profits this year, have been copied by businesses throughout the world.

But just how efficient are the Japanese?

"Toyota and Sony are efficient, but they are atypical," says James Kondo, of the Tokyo branch of business consultants McKinsey.

"Generally, Japanese firms are quite unproductive on a national scale. They are quite unproductive in general. A very small percentage are models that we should be looking at. Only a tiny percentage are globally competitive."

Dang.
I'd wish they did not mention  Toyota in the same sentence as :puke: Sony.

In manfacturing both are "efficient" but with wildly opposite attitudes towards quality. In management, Sony has been in slow downwards spiral of Japanesque hamster-wheeling since the death of "Mr Sony" Morita.

Crap, Crap, Crap

Thats the biggest mistatement. It really shows poor analysis skills.

Japanese firms are quite unproductive on a national scale.

It should be:

Japanese firms are quite inefficient, compared to other first world countries, on a national scale.

Then the question exists if that is a problem. is it? I say NO.
There is a inverse relationship between high productivity and quality.

The Japanese make up in overtime what they lack in efficiencey. Just aske the typical Japanese person after they put in a twelve hour day.
