I.B.M. Supercomputer Sets World Record for Speed
NYTimes.com > Technology /Published: September 29, 2004
By JOHN MARKOFF
An I.B.M. machine has reclaimed the title of world's fastest supercomputer, overtaking a Japanese computer that had caused shock waves at United States government agencies when it set a computing speed record in 2002.
... The International Business Machines computer is based on a computing technology, called BlueGene/L, that takes an approach radically different from that used by the Japanese supercomputer, called the Earth Simulator....
The I.B.M. supercomputer has surpassed the Earth Simulator, built by the NEC Corporation, in running the Linpack benchmark, a test program that solves a dense system of mathematical equations. I.B.M. announced yesterday that the Blue Gene/L system had attained a sustained performance of 36.01 trillion calculations per second, or teraflops, eclipsing the top mark of 35.86 teraflops reached in 2002 by the Earth Simulator in Yokohama.

Japan takes on super challengeOctober 12, 2004 The Times / The Australian...The sting of losing the supercomputing title to IBM after years of Japanese superiority is felt so strongly that a unique industrial alliance has been formed by three traditionally fierce rivals, Toshiba, Hitachi and NEC.
The project is backed and devised by the Ministry of Science and Technology, which is expected to demand from the central government a 2 billion yen ($34 million) chunk of next year's budget.....
....The project's aim is to develop, by about 2010, a computer capable of 1000 trillion calculations a second – almost 25 times faster than the Japanese Earth Simulator computer that was until recently the most powerful in the world....

2010? Yeah, and by then Smellovision will have replaced television, and I'll have a dodecophonic sound system with moon-rock speakers (dingo-berries to the person who catches the reference).

But in the year 2004, to paraphrase one of the fighters from the Van Damme classic "Bloodsport"...
You lose, Japanese asshole.

PS: Taro, is there anything you, Mulboyne, Bilderman, et al. don't know? Has the Blue Gene computer spontaneously attained consciousness, and you guys are it?

SGI & NASA Build World's Fastest Supercomputer
Tuesday October 26, @10:45PM
from the but-does-it-run-windows dept.
"SGI and NASA have just rolled-out the new world number one fastest supercomputer. Its performance test (LINPACK) result of 42.7 teraflops easily outclasses the previous mark set by Japan's Earth Simulator of 35.86 teraflops AND that set by IBM's new BlueGene/L experiment of 36.01 teraflops. What's even more awesome is that each of the 20 512-processor systems run a single Linux image, AND Columbia was installed in only 15 weeks. Imagine having your own 20-machine cluster?"

Asahi: University's supercomputer ranked `world's best'
The SX-7 machine used by Tohoku University in Sendai is now much in demand. To researchers and engineers, a supercomputer is as essential as a calculator is to an accountant. That's why many took notice when one such computer here won high marks. The supercomputer at Tohoku University has been drawing national attention ever since it aced a new U.S. performance test in December. The High Performance Computing Challenge (HPCC) test rated the SX-7 the "world's best" supercomputer for its "practicality" in quickly solving the kinds of complicated equations used in advanced scientific research. That's a step up from most other supercomputers that are designed to process as many simple calculations as possible within a given period of time.

Googlephonics-the highest number of speakers before infinity. It's a nice car stereo, wouldn't want it in my house.

Japan goes for supercomputer world title

Postby FG Lurker » Wed Jun 01, 2005 11:52 am

Japan goes for supercomputer world title
Techworld, May 31, 2005
Japan's Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology has established a program with NEC , Hitachi, and several Japanese universities to develop a supercomputer by 2011 will be able to perform three quadrillion calculations per second (three petaflops), according to Toshihiko Hoshino, information, science and technology director at the ministry's Research and Promotion Bureau.

A computer running at such a speed would race ahead of today's fastest systems, which are typically capable of tens of trillions of calculations per second, or tens of teraflops. A teraflop is one trillion calculations per second and a petaflop is 1,000 teraflops.

(Full Story)

3 petaflops?? Well, no one can say they aren't being ambitious.

I guess we'll know when it comes online by the powergrid failure. ;)
And you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking
Racing around to come up behind you again
The sun is the same in a relative way, but you're older
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death

Japan is dropping in supercomputer race

Postby Taro Toporific » Thu Jun 23, 2005 8:27 am

Note this report's comment about the incresing adoption of the Linux "eight of the top 10 supercomputers ran on Linux".

IBM increases supercomputer dominance
computerworld.com.au, June 22
...For the second time, IBM's BlueGene/L System at the U.S. Department of Energy's Lawrence Livermore National Laboratories in Livermore, California, was the fastest supercomputer in the world....
In fourth position was the previous number one fastest supercomputer prior to BlueGene/L, NEC's Earth Simulator in Yokohama, Japan, with a Linpack benchmark performance of 35.86 teraflops

Japan plans 30-year supercomputer forecasts
Associated Press Tue Jul 18, 11:30 AM ET
TOKYO -
Japan is planning ultra long-range 30-year weather forecasts that will predict typhoons, storms, blizzards, droughts and other inclement weather, an official said Tuesday.
The project, to start next year, will harness the powers of one of the world's fastest supercomputers and is an offshoot of ongoing research by the country's science ministry to map global warming trends for the next 300 years.
Using the Earth Simulator supercomputer, housed in a hangar-sized building in Yokohama, just south of Tokyo, Japan's science ministry hopes to calculate long-term patterns in the interaction of atmospheric pressure, air temperatures, ocean currents and sea temperatures...more....

Japan losing its place in supercomputer ranks
Yomiuri Shimbun Dec 13, 2007
Japanese-made supercomputers are losing their top positions as the world's fastest supercomputers, according to a list released last month.
Worldwide competition is fierce to build the latest and greatest of these machines, which perform enormous calculations at high speeds and are a pillar in most advanced technology design. And Japan has decided fight back and try to regain the top positions through a project to improve existing supercomputers starting in April.
The latest supercomputer world ranking, the TOP500, was released at the International Supercomputing Conference, held in Nevada in November.
The list is released twice a year and is based on how many calculations of simultaneous linear equations a machine can perform, a common test of supercomputer performance.
The latest list again showed leading Japanese supercomputers moved down the list.
The Earth Simulator of the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC), which started operating in March 2002, was ranked top until June 2004 and has since inched down the list, ranking 20th in June and 30th in November. ....
