I Love Kansai
Our seventh 'I love Kansai' guest is Ms. Diane Orrett, originally from Liverpool, England. Diane came to Japan in 1990 and has lived in Osaka ever since. While in Osaka she has studied and gained a deep appreciation for a variety of traditional Japanese arts and cultural forms such as flower arranging, the tea ceremony and the kimono.

More recently, Diane has become known by her stage name 'Diane Kichijitsu' ('lucky day') and makes stage appearances performing 'Rakugo', a traditional form of comic storytelling. Because she performs this stage-art in English as well as Japanese she has been able to bring the charm of Rakugo to many non-Japanese.

It's weird I've never seen her on TV. Kansai folk looooove their stand-up comics and yose vaudeville). There are a few manzai gaijin on TV (piss poor) but I haven't seen Diane who seem to be a natural for NHK's "talking-dog" needs.

She sounds like a pretty interesting woman. And a fully qualified FG. I think she may have been on NHK although I've never seen her.

The only reason that I have any idea about what an AVID system looks like is the fact that they just installed 3 at my school recently.

Minoru Miki's English language opera "The Tale of Genji"
Minoru Miki Opera
Genji was well received at its June 2000 premiere; Opera News called the production "a triumph"; the Wall Street Journal called Miki's score an "atmospheric masterpiece." The Post-Distpatch hailed the opera's "gorgeous production, superb cast, noble staging, and interesting, often beautiful music."
The role of Genji will be sung by baritone Carleton Chambers; Elizabeth Comeaux, Cheryl Evans, Josefa Gayer, Richard Clement, Andrew Wentzel, Jessica Miller, Graham Fandrei, and Eric Jordan are also featured.
[For Tokyo performances] the opera will be sung in English (the Japanese chorus -- the Tokyo Opera Singers -- will sing in English as well) with Japanese supertitles.
