Cheesy, Sleazy "Easy Breezy"

Yet another J-pop star makes an attempt at stateside stardom. Utada Hikaru is releasing a sort-of greatest hits in the U.S., titled EXODUS, featuring the single "Easy Breezy". Utada does her best Ayumi Hamasaki meets Mariah Carey impression for the video, and the lyrics...here's a sample:

"I still remeber the ways that you touched me.
Now I know that I don't mean anything to you.
You're easy breezy, and I'm Japanesy."

Many's the FG who'd like to pet that pussy, I'd venture, but be advised, it's for munchkin lovers only. Utada's under 5', and she's got just about the hardest-core pair o' TANSOKU dingo's ever seen.
Image

And besides, hasn't she been trying to get noticed in the US for, like, 6 years now? After she got married, at about age 19, to some Japanese photographer 15 years her senior, I hoped she'd do an Amuro and disappear down the memory hole. No such luck. She does have a better singing voice than ol' itachi-chan, though.

Nice voice.
Pretty package.

HORRID MUSIC AND LYRICS!

I'd throw a shot into her, but only if she promised not to have that music anywhere near us. I may keep it around though...it's better than ice-cold water for "swelling" *shudder*

But then, I don't like J-pop. Techno, House and Industrial are awesome when coming from Japanese artists, but J-pop sucks IMO.

I still remeber the ways that you touched me.
Now I know that I don't mean anything to you.
You're easy breezy, and I'm Japanesy

Translation:-

"Yes we had sex,
And I liked you only because I needed a one night stand and I knew you weren't the relationship kind,
you're a man slut, and well.... I'm Japanese so 'nuff said"

That's WTF with the lyrics

She was born and raised in New York. Oddly her speaking voice does have an accent so I guess she is " Japanesy."

Here's the scene's from the video....

She didn't know how to drive so to make the video she had to go to crash diivers' ed course.

Maybe I missed it, but didn't American Pop already die?

It's possible with the right representation to turn her into an ethnic curiosity, but she's already rich and I doubt she is hungry enough for that - it's hard work becoming a star. Up all night, trying to sing on morning shows at 5AM. Will she be willing to go through that?

I just don't think she sings well enough for the American Market. Hasn't her hook always been her ability to change fashions and send the school-girls hurrying to Shibuya 109?

America is a whole new game.

she totally disappointed me. I am not a fan but can't believe she lyriced about Japanese slutty girl. So then, "Japanesy" girl should be fooled by male slut, huh.

That's more Ayumi Hamasaki. Utada has never really been a fashion trendsetter.
Utada is the Japanese music industry's idea of what foreigners will like. I don't think she is quirky enough to succeed but she does have the English and that is important. UA's personality and music would have a better chance Stateside but her English singing pronunciation is dreadful. Shiina Ringo could probably find a market too but she doesn't seem overly-interested in trying.

She had a song released about 3 years ago titled "Blow My Whistle" featuring Foxy Brown (Hip Hop Honey)... that came of of the "Rush Hour" Soundtrack. It was ok but not memorable.

This won't suceed for one reason alone... the only people who will care will be Japanophiles and most of them are anime-otaku who will just download the stuff.

Didn't she do a song for the game Kingdom Hearts? Or did Kingdom Hearts use one of her songs? Point is, she already has a fanbase of Square fans in the U.S.

True recipe for sucess in America:
Have an unauthorized sex video (nightvision optional) "leaked" to the public shortly after the release of her album.

It's not her music that will keep her out of the top ten. It's her name. Americans rarely buy anything from foreign markets. Also there is gonna be the typical problems with the pronounciation. "It's ootada!" "No it's Uhtada!" Plus the lyrics suck and the music is bad and she looks funny in her video. Look at the makeup! She is trying too hard.

Say what? Is this interviewer on crack? Utada Hikaru does cheesecake, just like any normal Japanese girl. She's just overly concerned about her small-side titties and dwarf legs.

Leaving the Girl Behind
Japan's Pop Star Has Made Her 'Exodus' to Adulthood
By Sean Daly, Washington Post Staff Writer
Thursday, October 14, 2004]
NEW YORK -- Utada Hikaru doesn't do cleavage. She doesn't tend to flash acres of golden abs, as do divettes Britney and Jessica and Christina when the cameras are ogling them. And only rarely does Utada, Japan's reigning pop princess since she was a wee 15, take her bare legs for a stroll.
"When I dress girlie in New York, I always feel like I look like a hooker just because I'm Asian," says the tiny 21-year-old, sitting in the posh lobby of the Four Seasons Hotel....
....spent most of her life whiplashing between Manhattan and Tokyo -- isn't sure who she wants to be these days. It isn't an anonymous college student: She dropped out of Columbia University after half a semester a couple of years ago because "it wasn't as difficult as I was hoping it would be."...
"I just went to the doctor's this morning to get a general checkup. After checking me out, the doctor asked, 'Are you under a lot of stress?' She didn't even know what job I do," says Utada, parting the long black hair that routinely threatens to swallow her face. "I have had health problems with stress. I guess I keep it all inside."
That visit to the doctor, however, also inspired this revelation: "I like getting blood drawn. I like getting shots. It's stimulating. I don't see why pain is that bad....

Wau! Some heavy-duty strings, reinforced with space-age carbon nanotubes, must've been pulled to get li'l Utada a write-up in the Washington Post. Dingo liked how she said that everyone in NY seems to think Asian chick = sex worker. She should come home to her ancestral homeland, where the men are waaaay beyond that kind of crude, anachronistic stereotyping.

Yomiuri: Utada begins her Exodus

It's said that the pot of gold is on the Billboard Top 200, and if we believe what Universal is trumpeting, Utada is sitting pretty at the end of the rainbow. No. 3 on one chart, No. 5 on another, oodles of press coverage, prime TV features--at this rate she'll be doing Gap ads in a few weeks!
While it's true that Exodus has entered the Billboard charts, the numbers being flouted are more glitter than gold. It's her song "Devil Inside," and not Exodus, which hit No. 3 on the Hot Dance Club Play list, not the Top 200. The album did debut at No. 5 on the Heatseeker chart, a ranking for new artists, but just No. 160 overall. Not bad, but many Japanese have fared just as well, if not better.
...MTV has labeled her "Sarah McLachlan with a dash of Madonna dipped in sake." Dipped in sake?
Taking a cue from Ricky Martin, Utada is running with it. Remember when Ricky had all of the United States "Livin' La Vida Loca," gobbling up his oh-so-slightly exotic pop, dashes of espanol here and there? Fast forward to "Easy Breezy." Utada croons "konnichiwa," then "sayonara," and in that catchy chorus, "I'm Japanese-y." With The United States' recent Nippon fetish, from The Last Samurai to Ichiro to Yu-Gi-Oh!, being Japanese-y may just take Utada to the ichiban position.
