"terrifying as the surface of another planet"

Stylings of the Japanese
Steve finds what's hot - and what's so, so not
By Steve Tilley -- For the Edmonton Sun
TOKYO -- The mind of the teenaged Japanese girl is a place as exotic, mysterious and terrifying as the surface of another planet. In another galaxy. In a whole 'nother universe, one ruled by saucer-eyed pink kittens in platform boots and French-maid outfits, smoking crack.
Which isn't to suggest Japanese girls themselves have drugs habits, other than a hardcore, insatiable, plunging-the-syringe-directly-into-an-artery addiction to fashion. It's an amazing thing to behold, and there's no place to be beholdin' like Tokyo's uber-trendy Shibuya district on a Sunday afternoon. Faster-than-light rocket ship not required. ...

Steve Tilley of the Edmonton Sun is recycling writing about "platform boots" and "ganguro girls" from years ago. "Platform boots" aren't being sold anymore and it's hard to find a ganguro in Shibuya except for guys going for the retro transvestite look. Tilley must be drunk in his hotel room still terrifyied of the "surface of another planet."
