Japanese Hostage Taken by al-Zarqawi

Postby mr. sparkle » Wed Oct 27, 2004 6:46 am

Breaking news: a Japanese national has been taken hostage in Iraq by radical Islamists.

AP wrote:CAIRO, Egypt -- A video on a militant Islamic Web site Tuesday showed a captive it said was a Japanese man kidnapped by Abu Musab al-Zarqawi's group and threatened to behead him within 48 hours unless Japan pulls its troops from Iraq.

The man, who appeared in a white T-shirt, was identified only as someone connected to the Japanese armed forces. He spoke briefly in English and Japanese, before one of three masked militants standing behind him read a statement.

"They want to withdraw the Japanese troops from Iraq or cut my head," the man said.

One of the militants said Japan had 48 hours with withdraw the troops, "otherwise his fate will be the same as his predecessors, Berg and Bigley and other infidels," referring to the beheadings of British engineer Kenneth Bigley and U.S. businessman Nicholas Berg.

The video bore the logo of al-Qaida in Iraq, the new name for al-Zarqawi's group, which has claimed responsibility for the beheadings of Bigley and Berg, as well as numerous car bombings and other attacks.

It had to happen! and it has.....

Now is this a 'for real' or 'for money' kidnapping.

The last three hostages cost Koizumi and the Japanese Government $10,000,000 so what's going on behind the scenes now must be incredible.....

.....Breaking news....Japanese Government now says this guy has been hired by the Iraqis and is not actually kidnapped......

Gee....when the going gets weird.

I don't doubt a deal was done but is there any media source (no matter how unreliable) for that number?. The Italians were supposd to have paid a bar but, again, who knows?

Several weeklies printed copies of bank transfers amounting to about $10,000,000 suddenly paid to two Iraqi 'development' corporations that had not existed two days before the kidnapping.

The Bungei Shinju then had an interview with one of the Iraqi 'directors' of one the new corporations in which he explained how the money was to be used for humanitarian aid to a group that again had not existed two days before the kidnapping.

Both corporations and humanitarian groups now no longer exist.

Could just be a coincidence thought :D

Thanks for that. No-one has mentioned a number before. It seems as if the UK tried to free Bigley and screwed so that probably isn't an option for anyone right now.

I know it could never happen but my ultimate wet dream would be to have the Japanese self defense forces stage a armed rescue of the guy, capture the Iraqi terrorists and then beheaded them with a Katana on live TV saying..

"Now that's how we do a beheading

whatever it takes to break the back of George Bush's stupid coalition.

Some more info and a picture...but I don't see how the guy could be 24 years old (or Japanese)...
Japanese hostage in Iraq a 24-year-old drifter: government
Shosei Koda, the Japanese man facing execution by Islamic militants in Iraq, is a 24-year-old drifter whose family had not heard from him for months, a government spokesman and the hostage's father said.

The father identified Shosei Koda, 24, after seeing a video from Islamist militants who have threatened to kill his son if Japan does not withdraw troops from Iraq within 48 hours, Chief Cabinet Secretary Hiroyuki Hosoda said.

I hear from so many Japanese people that going overseas is somehow "unsafe", yet Japanese backpackers often seem to easily get themselves into pretty dangerous situations all by themselves.
First, we heard about Japanese backpackers staying in a church during an Isreali army assault through bethlehem, and now this!

Terrible as his likely end might be, does anyone believe he has anyone to blame but himself?

What kind of arse would voluntarily visit Iraq in order to 'find themselves'?!

As others have said, this seems like a form of suicide.
