...By the way, when the series was sold to Japan they were particularly worried about Red Dwarf because they thought it was (chuckles) 'anti-small-peopleist' ... but of course it isn't, it has nothing to do with small people, meaning to 'embarrass small people' they thought it was about, but anyway ...
...Q: So when did it suddenly become popular in Japan?
Um, it's been, well it was sold to Japan about 5 years ago (1997?) and the range of merchandise they've got now is just phenomenal ... they're just opening a Red Dwarf Restaurant where you go in and you choose the meal from a list of curries and choose the episode you wanna watch and then you go into a small booth and watch the episode and eat your Lister Curry - it's a big relief, really.

Where is this restaurant?!?! Where the smeg did you hear all this?? Do Japanese people think Red Dwarf started to suck when Kochanski joined too, like many British Dwarfers?

Another Red Dwarf connection with Japan -

Here in Ireland we have a channel called "Challenge TV"; apart from having crappy repeat gameshows all day, it has a half hour snippet of Takeshi's Castle. Providing commentary on the madness is none other than the smeg-tastic Craig Charles! maybe thats where the Japan link comes about...

BTW, has anyone ever won takeshi's castle? Never managed to see it in the few episodes I saw - must be those highly trained emerald guards...

Takeshi's Castle hasn't had any winners as far I as I can remember (it's been 15 years). However there were plenty of f'ed gaijin contestants---oddly none of the FGs just smashed " those highly trained emerald guards" and made the goal.
