An infant boy was rescued on Wednesday from a car that had been buried under large rocks for four days after being hit by a landslide triggered by Saturday's huge earthquakes, the Tokyo Fire Department said.
A helicopter arrived on the scene in the Myokenmachi district of Naganoka, Niigata Prefecture, to airlift the boy while rescue workers continue trying to free his mother and sister, who are alive. ...more....

Gee the story fails to mention how they found the car the night before but waited till the next day to start digging. Then. after finding two of the three, it got dark again and they all trudged off home to have sake and noodles leaving the last child (dead or alive) in the car.

Like the Kobe quake, Japanese have been passive and waiting for orders for "authorities"...even when they are the authorities.

At least all you folks in the Real World don't have to listen to sob story on the TV for the past 20 hours straight. Bah.

Mother dies after quake rescue

Mother Dies After Quake Rescue
http://edition.cnn.com/2004/WORLD/asiapcf/10/26/japan.quake/index.html
Takako Minagawa, 39, died Wednesday after being trapped in a landslide triggered by weekend earthquakes. Her 3-year-old daughter Mayu was still trapped in the wreckage.

Rescue efforts played out on live TV as Minagawa and her 2-year-old son Yuta were pulled from the van still partially buried in Niigata prefecture.

Hospital officials said Yuta was recovering with his father, who was not in the vehicle. Mayu remained trapped as the search team suspended its efforts due to dangerous aftershocks in the landslide area and darkness...

Holding up spotlights, workers used shovels, crowbars and brute force to try to free the three as aftershocks jolted the area, Reuters said.
Why do I get the feeling they didn't use the proper tools for the job?.. 'Jaws of life', anyone? I wonder if they utilized the jack in the car?..
Sad, and happy story.. The father must be a mess.
