the man will insist on wasting no end of time and energy to work out where
he's going on his own, while the woman will calmly ask for directions.

When they come to live in a foreign country, women have an obvious need for
information and support, and so the necessary resources exist. But for men
it has become trendy to arrive in a country without information and grope
your way through the dark as you get to know the way things are done.
Guidebooks not only make for a boring read, but amount to cheating at the
game of making it abroad.

But while he is wandering around in circles trying to find his way, the
short cuts, the opportunities, the best of life in a foreign country may be
passing him by.

The Guy's Guide to Japan is conceived as a companion for men (and women) to
make the most of their life in Japan. Though the phrase 'men's issues'
doesn't really exist, men actually face a whole host of them. From the
(supposedly) trivial such as how to find a football team to play for, and
everyday concerns like networking, to serious legal and financial issues.

If help comes in an appealing form - an attractive woman passing on the
street, say - men become willing to turn to it, but does this really give
them all the answers? With this spirit in mind, The Guy's Guide to Japan
will be presented in a humorous, anecdotal style, using interviews with men
who have been successful in various fields in Japan.

Thus The Guy's Guide to Japan will at the same time appeal to the sense of
ambition, adventure and humour that every man has in him. This will be a
positive, 'can do' book that will offer inspiration and practical help to
men who want to make the most of their time in Japan.

We are looking for men who are willing to be interviewed by email, about
their experiences in Japan. We will send you one question a day about a
specific topic for about a month, and ask that you respond as honestly and
in as much detail as possible. Your responses will be completely
confidential and your names will not be used within the book.

As an author of a book, I can tell you that unless the author is someone important, we're not talking "oodles" of cash. How big can the market be for these guidebooks?
As for the publisher... yeah, they might bring in some money.

Well, when I was reviewing other people's books before they were published, we'd get paid about $50/chapter... each chapter took a couple of days.

I never write any book review after I finish reading a book. However, this book is so bad that I decide to write a few comments to warn other readers. There are several reasons that you should not buy this book. (1) It is badly-written. I sometimes find that some of these figures are not correctly labelled. Authors should find a good software to write their book. (2) It is poorly-organized. After I read it twice, it is still very hard for me to find some information quickly. (3) It is out-of-date. Its servlet API is version 2.0. A few examples that you read cannot run at all on Java Web Server 2.0. It is talking about Java Web Server 1.1.1. The current of Java Web server version is 2.0. (4) There are many better books than this one. After I have read quite a few Servlet books, I find that the best one is probably Professional Java Server Programming. The Second best is Jason Hunter's Servlet Programming which has a nice collection of useful servlets. (5) The examples in this book are trivial.

I have been in and around journos and writers enough to know that this is how information has been collected since publishing started.

Who contributes to stuff like this:

If you have a story to tell and you think that others would like to hear about it but you don't have the time, will or patience to write a book yourself - then you contribute.

I have contributed to a heap of publications - book, newspaper articles etc etc. I do it if I think that the project is worthy and the people are respectable. If you think that somebody is trying to exploit you for their own means - then don't contribute.

Writers - especially free-lance- fall mainly into the first category. They are just trying to do their job the same as everyone else.

If you want to get paid for it - then you call Jerry Springer!!!
