Japan's navy gives chase to suspicious sub
Mainichi
The government ordered the Maritime Self-Defense Force (MSDF) to chase an unidentified submarine that was spotted in Japan's territorial waters around southwestern Okinawa Prefecture Wednesday morning, a government spokesman said.

The submarine subsequently left Japan's territorial waters, but the MSDF remains on full alert in case it intrudes into territorial waters again, Chief Cabinet Secretary Hiroyuki Hosoda told a news conference.

"It's extremely regrettable. We need to clarify the purpose of the intrusion and the nationality of the submarine among other questions," Hosoda said.

Even through the submarine left Japan's territorial waters, the P3C aircraft is continuing to pursue the vessel. The nationality of the submarine has not yet been confirmed.

Kyodo via Japan Today: Gov't suspects intruder submarine was Chinese
The MSDF has spotted two Chinese Navy vessels — one to rescue submarines and another to tow other ships — operating in waters southeast of Tanegashima Island since Friday, and is examining their possible relationships to the incident, MSDF officers said.
The two Chinese ships were observed repeatedly changing their direction and speed on Monday in waters some 315 kilometers southeast of the island, but left toward the East China Sea on Tuesday, they said.
There is a possibility the sub concerned was having trouble, according to the sources.

BEIJING — China's Foreign Ministry rejected Tuesday the Japanese Defense Agency's reported statements calling China a military threat and disputed the spread of reports that Japan is setting up a system to gather intelligence on Chinese warships.
China's policies promote peace with its Asian neighbors, ministry spokeswoman Zhang Qiyue said, and its development threatens no one. She urged that no one should spread information indicating China is a threat in the region. (Kyodo News)

Hosoda says Japan can't identify sub because it 'stays under water'
TOKYO — Japan continued to track an intruder submarine on Thursday that entered its waters Wednesday, but Chief Cabinet Secretary Hiroyuki Hosoda said it was still too early to identify the vessel, despite media reports that it was a Chinese nuclear submarine.
"We are still tracking the submarine outside our territorial waters," Hosoda told a news conference. He said Japan has yet to identify its nationality "because it stays underwater."

Japanese press lashes out at China over submarine intrusion

channelnewsasia.com : 13 November 2004 1326 hrs GMT---TOKYO : Japan's media has condemned the intrusion of a Chinese nuclear submarine into its waters with most newspapers saying Beijing should accept a demand from Tokyo to apologise over the incident.....
.....The Chinese diplomat told Machimura that Beijing was in the midst of its own investigation into the submarine incident and thus declined to accept a protest or make an apology.
The liberal {sic???} daily Mainichi Shimbun said Beijing should respond promptly to the apology demand.
"The fact is clear that (China) has entered our territorial waters," the Mainichi said in an editorial.
"China must immediately disclose the outcome of its investigation and come up with preventive measures... We demand China's honest response," it said.
The conservative daily Sankei Shimbun called China's behavior "unforgivable," also demanding a swift apology

kurohinge1, that's how they ID submarines, from the cavitation sound. Toshiba helped design some of the equipment used for American submarines, and they later sold that technology to the USSR.

by Mike (in Tokyo) Rogers / Nov 18Oh no! Here it comes again: Bonenkai season in Japan!
You've heard wild, unsubstantiated, stories that people in Japan like to drink? Rumors that many Japanese get drunk daily? You've also heard sordid tales of drunk Japanese businessmen terrorizing the streets of Tokyo at night? "Tondemonai!" (Poppy-cock) I say! I deny that completely... I haven't had a drink for at least several hours now....more...

Brilliant. Next April Fools' Day, let's load up the dingy with a few lagers and lager-loving FG's and head on out to Maritime Self-Defense Force Land, with our collection of Best of Submarine Sounds CD's which we can play loud through some marine speakers, near one of the sonobuoys.

I'm thinking we start with some sounds from Chinese "Song" class subs (excuse the pun), then move on to a few "Yaun" sub tracks (especially after some beers in the sun), throw in some weighty Russian "Kilo" class sub sounds and then confuse them thoroughly by finishing with a WWII German U-boat - around the time we do a U-turn and start heading back to shore, waving enthusiastically to the swarms of Japanese PC3 aircraft frantically looking for the Chinese-Russian-German invasion armada.

Then they won't be alarmed when the JNSDF drops several hundred depth charges on the next submarine that they send in to Japanese waters by stealth?

Who the fuck do the Chinese think is provoking who here? Thanks to the thinking and work of the media, they feel they can do anything in Japanese areas they want and justify it claiming foul because of the Yasukuni visits. What's worse is that they are not alone in this thinking!
