Warning on probiotic food claims
The Sydney Morning Herald. November 13, 2004
....The Food Standards Code prohibits companies making health claims linking food to reduction in disease. The Victorian Food Safety Unit is investigating a complaint by a Sydney consumer about claims by the Japanese company Yakult on its Australian website that probiotics help prevent intestinal disease and cancer.
A Yakult spokeswoman said the site was being changed to comply with Australian regulations. Food Standards Australia and New Zealand is preparing guidelines allowing health claims to be made in the future only if they meet strict conditions.
"If there were claims for disease reduction, this would be a high-level claim and must be scientifically evaluated by us," a Food Standards spokeswoman said
