North Korea said its program began several years after it signed the so-called Agreed Framework in 1994, promising the United States, Japan, and South Korea that it would freeze its nuclear program, in exchange, the other signatories agreed to provide light-water nuclear technology for power generation.

Anyone remember the missile NK fired over Japan a few years ago? Very comforting to know a beligerant hermit has control of nuclear missiles only a stones throw away. Why does he exist..?

Just because they say they have a nuke program doesn't mean they have any weapons. Either way, as if the Japanese needed another reason to dispise them?

True. But what to believe? Almost anything NK says turns out to be a lie. Also, why are other nations helping them build nuclear power plants when they ALREADY have the technology, and OBVIOUSLY the ability?

Either way, as if the Japanese needed another reason to dispise them?

I thought it was the Koreans who despised the Japanese..

I'm curious how things turn out. Now Bush is getting a lot of heat for going after Iraq when NK is far more advanced in it's 'program'.. And he knew about it!

I liked the quote I read on CNN by a supposed senior official from NK, during talks with his US counterpart a couple of weeks back:

"Your president called us a member of the axis of evil ... Your troops are deployed on the Korean Peninsula ... Of course, we have a nuclear program"

While I believe a nuclear armed North Korea is quite alarming, it goes to show there is always another side to the story. Whatever the West thinks of the North Koreans, in their eyes they are just trying to cover their own asses. It has worked as well - I think the US will take a very different tack with a country they know (well, almost definately know) has nukes, than with one they believe wants them. Besides, there is no oil in North Korea...
