And they gave him 30-days which will probably be suspended.

Apparently the USA was all bark and no bite on this one!

Speaking of which... where are we with Bobby Fisher? There is an order in place preventing his detention, right? And next hearing is in January, right? Is he still being held in detention somewhere?

Jenkins airlifted to jail site
YOKOSUKA, Kanagawa -- Charles Robert Jenkins arrived at U.S. Navy Yokosuka Naval Base late Wednesday night to begin serving a 30-day sentence after he was found guilty of desertion and aiding the enemy earlier in the day, the Mainichi has learned.

Jenkins was transported to Yokosuka by helicopter from Camp Zama, where he was convicted by a court martial earlier in the day.

Damn. Now those roadside bombs along Route 16 won't get him.

The bigger question, now Jenkins is a convicted felon and cannot be issued a Japanese visa according to Japanese Immigration "law".

Jenkins does not US Social Security benefits because he hasn't paid enough money into the system. Is the Japanese governmnet gonna give him money to live or is he gonna teach at NOVA? Will the Court issue a gag order on him for the book rights and movie options? When are Mika and Bellinda gonna do a lesbian nude photo shoot to raise money for their daddy?

Me bad.

I slightly "enhance" all the photos I post on the FG.

Here is a closeup of the too realist version of the "artist's" rendering from the US Army website.

Forget Jenkins, that sketch artist should get at least 3 years in the brig.

He obviously doesn't take the job seriously, I mean, look at his effort at the Simpson trial ...

Fascinating

Postby Marvin Feltcher » Thu Nov 04, 2004 10:49 pm

It was a fascinating court martial, the first I'd ever seen.
It was virtually scripted, which I discovered because the hack sitting in front of me had been supplied with a copy of goings on and the pre-trial agreement and I could catch glimpses of it as the court martial went on by looking over their shoulder.
These insiders had known the result for some time, it seems, which sort of gave the thing a real Big Brother or Stalin feeling, especially with all the Army acronyms and jargons that were like Newspeak and Doublespeak. It was made even more so because of the nature of the court martial, where the judge has to confirm that the accused really understands what they have done if they've entered a guilty plea and has to repeatedly ask leading questions to do so.
The Army operation was really slick...if only it could work as well in Iraq. They were really fantastic, setting everything up perfectly and being open and informative in what was a really confusing process. Best PR job they've done in Japan for years.
Jenkins was pitiful, which I am sure was the impression all sides wanted him to give. His lawyer, Culp, was occasionally melodramatic, but gave a moving and powerful closing argument.
Soga was incredible. That quiet woman's power and her ability to overcome adversity were really moving. An amazing woman.
The prosecutor scared the shit out of everybody, even those who knew what was coming. Right at the time when pretty much all those watching from an auditorium set up to display proceedings had firmly moved into the "Free Jenkins" camp, he suddenly came out with a stinging attack demanding he be jailed, which really fucked everyone in the Japanese media because the presumption was Jenkins would be let off with no jail time.
I'm by no means a Jenkins fan, but I think the verdict was perfect. He had to be punished because of the severity of his crimes, but he'd paid enough by having had to live for 40 years under the regimes of the Kims. I hope they let him out ASAP. I also hope we'll hear his full story some day, but I don't know how much he really remembers. He's clearly an alcoholic, possibly brain-damaged and nobody is likely to ever find out what really went on considering how everything around him is so sanitized and sheltered now. He's been through some fairly bizarre shit.
He's basically a dumb country kid who had these weird ideas about getting home and instead got a huge mind fuck. He's a wreck, but his wife and kids apparently adore him -- let them live quietly off in the sticks.
I wanted to write something and had all these ideas floating about in my head, but I was there as an assistant for the Japanese paper and it's a bit too late now. Still, it was an amazing experience.

This story is similar to the bit in Time...
Jenkins deserted 'out of fear'
BBC
Charles Robert Jenkins, 64, who ended up living in the North for 39 years, was given a dishonourable discharge at his court martial in Japan.

He pleaded guilty to desertion, saying he wanted to avoid "hazardous" duty on the Korean peninsula and in Vietnam.

He also admitted aiding the enemy by teaching English in North Korea, but denied encouraging disloyalty.

"Ma'am, I am in fact guilty," Jenkins earlier told the judge, Colonel Denise Vowell, in sometimes tearful testimony at the court hearing in Camp Zama, the headquarters of the US army in Japan.

How the hell did walk through a minefield after drinking ten brewskies, let alone "lead" a patrol?

Anyway, now he's living large on my tax money. They're getting 300,000yen a month, allowed to make supplimental income, and they don't have to pay rent -- on Sado Island they're wealthy.

Love and hate the bonds that got Jenkins through hell in the Worker's Paradise
By Marvin Feltcher

Mainichi Daily News

.... [Teaching English] was this job that led to Jenkins being found guilty of aiding the enemy, an offence for which he could have been handed a maximum penalty of life imprisonment. He was dismissed from the position after effectively reaching his use-by date.
"They didn't want my pronunciation no more," he said in his deep Southern drawl tinge with slurs suggesting years of hard drinking. "North Koreans said our pronunciation had been corrupted by North Korean language. To be honest, they kicked us out."

Jenkins cries with joy after release from jail
Japan Times
CAMP ZAMA, Kanagawa Pref. (AP) Free for the first time in nearly four decades, U.S. Army deserter Charles Jenkins sobbed with joy as he was released from a military jail on Saturday after serving 25 days for abandoning his squad and crossing the border into North Korea in 1965.

The frail 64-year-old, still in uniform and carrying a heavy duffel bag, broke down in tears after arriving at Camp Zama, the U.S. Army's Japan headquarters, where he was flown by Blackhawk helicopter after completing his sentence at the naval prison in Yokosuka.

When asked how he felt, Jenkins said he was "happy," and then sobbed for several moments.

"Forty years is a long time," he said.

Looks like that duffel is carrying him...

"I made a big mistake"

Postby Taro Toporific » Mon Dec 06, 2004 10:27 am

Deserter regrets 40 years in NKorea
12/6/2004
NEW YORK (AFP) -
A US Army deserter said the one thing he did right during his 40 years in North Korea (news - web sites) was to leave the country, which was training his daughters as spies, in an interview published.
"I made a big mistake of my life, but getting my daughters out of there, that was one right thing I did," Charles Robert Jenkins told Time magazine 40 years after he downed 10 beers and wandered across the demilitarized zone ...
....He said that the North Koreans wanted to use daughters Brinda, 19 and Mika, 21, as spies.
"They wanted us to have children," Jenkins told Time, "so they could use them later."

Jenkins to publish autobiography, written by Time bureau chief
Kyodo via Japan Today
Saturday, February 26, 2005 at 07:49 JST
NIIGATA — Charles Jenkins, whose wife is former Japanese abductee to North Korea Hitomi Soga, has decided to publish an autobiography, sources close to him said Friday. The publisher, the date of publication and the amount of the contract have yet to be decided, the sources said.

Jenkins, 65, signed up with Time magazine's Tokyo bureau chief Jim Frederick, who will write the book based on interviews with him. The book will cover Jenkins' life at large, including his 1965 desertion to North Korea, events there, and his life in Japan since he came to his wife's homeland last July. (Kyodo News)
