Asahi: Gift-givers told not to iron crumpled cash
Bank of Japan officials have issued special care instructions for new banknotes that went into circulation last month: "Do not iron!" The officials said the holograms printed on the crisp new bills to prevent counterfeiting are not fully heatproof.
"We understand people may want to make wrinkled bills look brand-new (for otoshidama, money given to children at New Year's), but we recommend that they do not iron the bills too much"' BOJ officials said. Although the new bills are highly durable, the hologram, it appears, is not.
...BOJ officials are not saying exactly how much heat the notes can withstand, admitting only that ironing the 3-D image would lead to damage."Our new notes have a durability as high as, or higher than, bank notes using holograms issued in other countries, but ironing of bills is far beyond normal use," said BOJ officials. They added that the notes would not lose their value if the hologram was damaged

It's only my two cents but it just as well those notes make bad gifts since the new notes are bugged.

I wonder if the hologram is just a decal, then you ccould iron it off and stick it to a photocopied one. bring the broken on back to the bank then you have just doubled your money.

Its a bit of a crappy forge though as you can only make 1 note amd maybe lose the firs one.

In the interest of science, I just put a new 10,000 bill in my lamination press at work. Nope, it doesn't peel off--it just turns to goo (both at the low and medium settings).

Scientific experiments are expensive, ne? The hologram is coated in plastic. You can see the plastic if you look at it in the correct light. The plastic is a little larger than the hologram.

Did you try it twice? thats like $212....

For the next experiment i suggest a mircowave. (it it is like foil in biscut packets it will spark, but becasue its very small its not very effective. Next time you have a bag of doritos with the foil wrapping put it it and turn down the lights. Its a mini firework display and wont damage your microwave.)


Under closer inspection the hologram really does look like a decal.

I have some photography chemicals in my university dark room. Maybe I will try and lift it....
