Japan envoy asks Peru for patience in Fujimori extradition

Postby Steve Bildermann » Sun Nov 28, 2004 7:17 am

Japan's ambassador in Peru, Yubun Narita, called for patience in resolving the thorny issue of whether former president Alberto Fujimori should be extradited to stand trial

I would like the Peruvian side to understand that the idea of extradition is not an easy thing, there is great complication," Narita said.

Kyodo Via Yahoo: Ex-Peru President Fujimori reported to return home this year
Former Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori will return to Peru from Japan, where he has been in exile since abandoning his presidency in November 2000, by the end of this year to run for the presidential election next year, according to reports Tuesday...Fujimori has attained high popularity as a presidential candidate in public opinion polls, but will be arrested if he returns home. Also, it remains unclear if he could run in the election, as the Peruvian Congress adopted a resolution in 2001 banning him from public offices for 10 years.

Reuters: Peru files seven Fujimori extradition requests
Peru will file seven new requests for the extradition of former President Alberto Fujimori from Japan on corruption charges, adding to two already pending on murder and graft counts, the government said on Tuesday. "There are nine extradition requests. Two are in the hands of the Japanese authorities and seven are in the process of being prepared," Justice Minister Eduardo Salhuana told reporters. The new requests relate to alleged misuse of state cash, improper issuing of decrees and other charges of government irregularity. Peru filed its first extradition request -- on charges of political responsibility for the murder by a death squad of 25 people -- in July 2003 and is still waiting for a reply. It has said it will take its case to the International Court of Justice in The Hague if it gets no answer by June.
