Until Dearth Do We Part

Until dearth do we part

It is a condition that many married Japanese know all too well.

The wedding bells fell silent years ago and the lovingly framed photo -- she in her gown, he in his tux -- has long since been put away in a drawer.

The couple has settled into a routine of comfortable domesticity. Real closeness, though, has become as distant a memory as the exact date they first held hands. Or what floor their honeymoon suite was on.

Or the last time they made love.

No matter the country or culture, sexual passions are prone to cool after a man and woman exchange vows. But in recent months, a torrent of magazine reports have been detailing how many marriages in Japan not only chill but plunge into sexual deep freeze, and looking at why they do so, and the suffering it causes.

"It's a nuisance to do it."

Reasons cited included "We are both tired," "I have no sexual desire," "After the second child it's too much" and "It's a nuisance to do it."

"In this country, we don't hug, kiss or touch. Sexual and bodily senses are not well developed," quipped one Japanese woman, a media professional who has lived overseas almost 20 years. "As a result, we cannot really express love in an affectionate manner. This applies to Japanese women as well."

Can anyone shed any light on why Japanese society frowns on public displays of affection? How does being affectionate disturb the "WA"?

I don't have an answer for you but Japan isn't the only society with those attitudes. Britain has changed a lot over the last fifty years we are still not a particularly tactile nation and, compared to Southern Europe, we are positively prudish. Perhaps we are still getting over the Victorian era. At least marriage isn't the end of sex.
N.B. More than a few of my FG friends have reported a sex drought in their marriages to local girls. Usually after a baby is born and the wife spends her nights sleeping with the baby rather than hubby.

Quoting Dr. Phil...
"Men don't marry when they have plenty of girlfriends.
Women don't marry when they've already got plenty of money."

Is this really any surprise to anybody?

I think the majority of marriages in Japan go something like:-

"Do you, lonely perverted frustrated salaryman, take poor, stupid, lazy, scheming
opportunist to be your lawfully wedded wife?"

"You DO?"

It doesn't surprise me either that wives sleep with their children more than hubby. How can a woman really respect a man that simply buys her out? What kind of woman actually seeks out specific guys so that she can turn herself into a sexual commodity? Why do many Japanese men put up with this? Why do many of them even want to marry so much?

WHAT ABOUT THE CHILDREN?!?!?! 8O
