What the hell is Mushiking?

Postby dimwit » Tue Dec 14, 2004 8:37 am

Okay so I was out Christmas shopping for my 5-year old and he has insisted that he wants a Mushiking battle set. He has wad of Mushiking cards, but for the life of me I can't figure what point of them is. The cards have janken symbols on them and various points but I haven't a clue what they mean. Any ideas?

As far as I can tell Mushiking isn't a TV show (yet) or a video games, so what make it such a phenomenon amongst the elementary school set? :?

Hey, at least he doesn't want real thing. Those damn bugs can sell for more than 20,000yen and the collection of them rapes the enviroment.

He does. And worse. When we were given a pair, he forgot about them, so I had to feed those overgrown cockroaches. They eventually escaped to my balcony, bred, produced larvae which took a great liking to my strawberry plant roots and my rhubarb, almost obliterating them.

Oh no, not the rhubarb! Rhubarb is rare treat in Japan (and of course best in combination with strawberry). Next time I'm down at your place you have to turn me on to your secret Rhubarb-&-Crack dealer so I can grow some my farm.

I'll bet he's one of those guys that says he'll only date Asian women and watches tentacle porn.

EDIT: I was just reminded of a time I was flying from Tokyo to Osaka and the flight attendants were giving out some free Pokemon shit to the kids. Some fat FG around 40 in business suit was asking if he could have one. Thank God they said no. What a loser.

I AM NOT A LOSER :P

Just kidding. But what I still can't figure out is, if Mushiking is a card game based on Janken, WTF are bar graphs and point values all about. I am trying to figure out what my son is doing and I have a sneaking feeling that I might be able to use the game in some of my classes. 8) Any ideas?

I think the bars relate to various 'strengths' or 'powers' of the respective bugs. One kid can call out their strongest thing and if it beats the other kids' cards then the first kid wins all the cards and gets to call again.

(This is all guess work based on a similar kids card game back in the UK, and is probably completely wrong.)

I have no idea what the janken symbols are for. But if my above hypothesis is correct then maybe if the kids have two cards that tie on one of the bar categories the janken symbol can be used as a tie-breaker.

Say hello to your pilot

So you have wondered why JAL is have so many problems with its planes -they are been flown by beetles.

JAL unveils 'Mushiking' jumbo jets for summer vacationers
(Kyodo) _ Japan Airlines unveiled two jumbo jets Wednesday emblazoned with characters fr0m "the King of Beetle Mushiking," a game popular among small Japanese children and students.
JAL is gracing the Boeing 777 jumbo jets with the character Popo and the images of flying beetles in a hangar at Haneda airport in Tokyo.

The Mushiking jumbos will be used on some of JAL flights linking Tokyo with Sapporo, Fukuoka and Kagoshima fr0m July 15 to Aug. 31, JAL officials said.

The game, developed into an animated series in April, is played with the "Beetle Cards" and "Attack Cards."

Full story here

I'm not sure why they chose Mushiknig as it seems to be popular only amongst a very limited demographic range -ie. 6 to 8 year old boys.
