Japan has been trying to get into the airplane market for a long time but the US has been intentionaly keeping her out.
They, as do I, that Japan can make a better airplane. Nothing is as un-ergonomic as a Boeing.

How does the US force Japan to stay out of the Airplane market???
They Keep the USAF in Japan and force the JSDF to buy US made jets/aircraft.

I do know that Toyota has been asked to stay out of the airplane market but instead they have been developing products for the airplane market.
Another girl in my Uni Japanese class I was screwing for a while was hired at Toyota and was doing several secret projects.

Don't know if this is the same plane, finally flying, but. . .

Kawasaki Heavy Industries' XC2 transport for Japan's Air Self-Defense Force achieved its first flight Tuesday, more than two years behind schedule.
Structural integrity problems delayed first flight, which Japan's Defense Ministry had originally planned for summer 2007, according to a report in The Japan Times. Kawasaki Heavy Industries started work on the plane in 2001.
