Japan Today: Yamanote line train set
This toy set has almost everything one could ask for in a model of Tokyo's most famous train line: flashing lights, sounds, and other realistic details. The only thing missing is the 9 a.m. commuter crush.

I don't think these toys can fully convey the essence of the Yamanote-sen commuting experience.

Nah, this:

is how you get that true Yamanote experience. :D

(Just not from the commuter's pont of view.)

ha.. I scanned that card game from a magazine, way back around 1997. I don't know what's weirder, the card game, or the fact that there's an electronic densha de go THREE.
I vaguely recall playing a train simulator online once. Of course I tried to see how fast I could do a lap around the Yamanotesen, but I got ejected from the game for blowing through all the stations at top speed.

If you count all the various arcade, console and portable versions, there have been 24 electronic ones - including an upcoming one for the PSP.

I think it'd be fun to play a portable one while riding the Yamanote. Try to see if you can get the game to match up with the real trains position, then tell people you're using the wifi in the PSP to control the real train. :D

I suppose I should be surprised, but I'm not. The capacity of the Japanese to produce mind-numbingly boring video games never surprises me. Here's another one I scanned in back around '97, with my original description:

Here is a game for the Sony Playstation. You have to shovel dirt with the virtual backhoe. It looks like it is almost as much fun as shoveling dirt with a real backhoe.

Have you ever seen one of those guys that stands up by the window behind the driver, pretending to pull the levers, and pointing at all the signals, copying the little rituals the driver does?

The Ghost of AssKissinger wrote:Yeah, that's so funny you should say that. There's this retarded kid on my line who just rides the train one stop over back and forth all day and he does that constantly. It must annoy the shit of the conductor. Now that I'm a ghost I like to float behind the retarded kid and imitate him imitating the conductor. Nobody can see me but I think it gives the retarded kid the spooks.
