Just wondering what fellow FG's eat for a living - same as before you came here, differences, any healthier, any worse, do you cook it, buy it, anything in particular you like, dislike? - not a survey, just curious.

Last night, I ate at Subway, although I normally try to avoid that place. I tend to eat out at cheap salaryman places on weekdays and order in Chinese food or pizza on the weekends. Occasionally, I cook simple dinners on weekends, too (slice of fish, bowl of rice, salad, etc.). Found a supermarket that sells maguro sashimi slices really cheap. It's cheap because they are the odd shaped slices and end pieces that can't be used for a beautiful presentation, yet are exactly the same quality and taste. 380 yen for a ton of maguro sashimi!

Tell me where to get the cheap sashimi.

Love pizza too but find way-way overpriced here. Lead me to more cheap good stuff.

I get that cheap maguro at a supermarket near my place in Tokyo. I bet most supermarkets have this, so just check out their raw fish section and hunt for bargains. The end pieces are called something-something otoshi (can't remember the whole name). If you can read hiragana, just look for the word "otoshi" on the package.

Maybe someone in the forums knows the entire Japanese word. Anyway, happy hunting....

I eat a whole heap of inari-zushi at lunchtimes. The rice wrapped up in tofu stuff. A bit too sweet for some people but I think it is Yummy.

At home I cook pasta sauces and curries like I did before I came to Japan - have to modify some of the ingredients.

If I am desperate and really hungry, I will drop in and have some gyu-don. cheap and filling.

I too like the supermarket sushi for a weekend lunch.

So it is a bit like fushion of what you are used to and what is easily available locally.

Indian curry; 4 Long Island Iced Teas.

Meals at home usually are something simple with rice. One of my favorites is tomato salad, rice, 3 yakitori sticks (the garllic and chicken kind). Cheap n' easy..

I'd stay away from the pizzas in Japan. You can feed an American family for a day for the price of one pizza here. Awhile back Pizza Hut had a 'good' Mexican pizza, but they stopped making it. GomiGirl had a great idea for some home pizzas.. I don't remember which thread it was though.

From reading the posts on this subject I don`t think there are a lot of recipes exchanged on F*cked Gaijin. Can anyone actually cook?

Sounds like all the foods groups are represented!!

For Pizza - English muffins split into halves - some Pizza sauce or tomato paste flavoured with your fave herbs and spices, tinned or fresh chopped tomato, cheese plus whatever else you want. Put in toaster oven and voila... Pizza subs - very yummy and everythig available from your local supermarket...

Here endeth the lesson

I do the same thing with tortillas. :)

I've become a big fan of instant mashed potatoes lately. Boil water and butter, add flakes and presto. Buttery hot goodness. You can even add strawberry jelly if you want that Swedish flavour.

Last night - mabu-nasu. Like mabu-dofu (exchange nasu for tofu).

Spicy and spread on a few hot dog buns - kinda like a healthyish sloppy joe. Gotta improvise from time to time I guess.
