You know, I've read about everything ever written about Aum, watched about every inch of videotape ever broadcast on the subject, I've even talked at length with Aum members, and I guarantee you that this pathetic piece of disinformation was written and planted by Aum.

Hmmm....This explains a great deal.

I would also expect that the Panawave folks will be saying that something happened to Tama-chan shortly.

I do get around. Or at least, I used to. It just so happened that I wrote my senior thesis on Aum.

Here's a curious bit of coincidence and art imitating life.

Referring to possiblities of earthquake making machinery, the article has a interesting name mentioned.

In 1995, British born Geologist/Geophysicist, Harry Mason, stumbled across a strange, unaccountable earthquake which rumbled across the vast open spaces of Western Australia two years earlier.

In BubbleGum Crisis Tokyo 2040,in the year 2032, the CEO of Genom , Harry Mason under orders from Quincy Rosenkrantz, Chairman of Genom, orders the use of a military developed earthquake generator on Tokyo to stop Galatea, the ultimate boomer, from escaping from the lab she was created in.

Charles, any truth to the rumor I heard that Aum was trying to develop some kind of laser weaponry? Or was it all wishful thinking on the part of conspiracy buffs?
There is nothing more noble than impassioned nonsense.

Hmm.. I vaguely recall something about that, but Aum was so incompetent at all their high-tech weaponry development, I am sure that nothing came of it. Even the US Dept. of Defense hasn't been able to develop effective laser weapons.

Probably the best summary of Aum's history is the book "The Cult at the End of the World." One of my favorite stories from the book describes Aum's original plan of attack on Tokyo, they developed botulism toxins, and bought 3 radio controlled mini-helicopters, they're commonly used by rice farmers for spraying chemicals. Aum planned to spray botulism toxin over Tokyo at the same time they were going to attack the subways, so people fleeing the underground sarin gas would emerge to inhale clouds of botulism. But Aum crashed all the RC helicopters while practicing for the aerial attack. So they bought a used military helicopter from Russia, and disassembled it into pieces small enough to smuggle into Japan in cargo containers. And then they couldn't figure out how to reassemble it and make it fly again.

What really saved Japan from more serious damage is that Aum was a bunch of incompetent lunatics with serious brain damage from taking too much LSD while wearing electrodes to zap their brains into "synchronization." If they hadn't spent so much time fucking up their heads, they might have been able to kill a lot more people. Aum actually killed more of their OWN members over the years from accidents with toxic chemicals than they killed in the sarin attack. But that's not accounting for the something like 1500 people with permanent injuries from the sarin attack..

Anyway, the Tesla stuff is sheer tinfoil hat stuff. I'll tell you the origin of the Tesla stuff, and it's absolute rubbish. Tesla claimed that he knew the resonant frequency of the earth, and he could cause earthquakes that would split the earth into pieces. According to the legend, Tesla did experiments by sinking a metal pole deep into the ground until it hit bedrock, then attached an electric motor driving an unbalanced flywheel to the top of the pole. The vibrations would be transmitted down the pole to the bedrock, and the vibrations would propagate throughout the earth's crust. If he just used the exactly right frequency, he could cause earthquakes that would smash up the whole planet, just like a singer can break a glass by singing the right note. According to the legend, Tesla ran the experiment and the earth started to shake, but when he turned off the motor, the flywheel kept running, he couldn't stop it. Supposedly the police were alarmed by the ground shaking and drove out to Tesla's lab, which was a frequent occurrence, anytime something weird happened (like the electric power grid failing), it was usually his fault.. and when they came in through the door, Tesla was just swinging a sledgehammer to smash the flywheel.
Of course the story is completely unsubstantiated, but Tesla nutballs love to repeat it, it's now part of his legend. Of course it's total horseshit.

Unfortunately, I loaned my paperback of The Cult at the End of the World and never got it back, now I only own a Reader's Digest Condensed Book version (with 4 other stupid books in the same binding) that I found on my Mom's bookshelf (dammit I wish she wouldn't waste money on that crap). I want to buy a new copy of the book but I am afraid if I order it, I'll get on some FBI terrorist watch list. If I can acquire a new one somehow without having to order it on a credit card and drawing the attention of the Secret Police, I'll put my my condensed RD version on the FG book club.
