I'm from Australia and work freelance (graphic art) for a German company (work at home), and am wondering if its possible to do this type of work while on a Working Holiday Visa? (within the 20 hours restriction rule)

A word of advice from someone who has had 2 WH visas: forget about that 20 hour restriction. It's not like they are going to a) catch you or b) do anything about it.

I don't see any reason why not... It might not be "officially" sanctioned work, but as DJEB (basically) wrote, I don't think the j-gov't will care.

The only thing they really seem to dislike is working in bar/"entertainment" industries. And many do that anyway without trouble.

Get your contract payments sent to your bank in Australia and then either withdraw them here or have someone wire them to you.

When you go for your visa renewal the best bet will be to claim that your parents/family are supporting your stay in Japan. Don't rock the boat by bringing up contract/freelance work!

I've just finished studying japanese last year, so I want to go in several months, I can already feel my knowledge draining away fast. Still in the process of getting a passport actually heh.

Actually I meant freelancing for companies outside of Japan, whilst in Japan.. I probably didn't make it clear enough in my first post.
