Sorry. Sounded to me like you were. What is "the most hippiefied university in Canada"? Brock? Mc Gill? If it's neither one of those, where do they rank? You might have to consult Macleans.

I'll give you a hint. It's on an island in the Pacific.

I've been over it a bunch of times in an airplane - that's as close as I've been.

1000km

Postby Lifer » Tue Jan 04, 2005 10:19 pm

This earthquake was 1000 kilometers long. That's 600 miles of tectonic plate moving at once, you really think that could be man-made? If some goob scientist did figure out how to do that then we are all truelly fucked - gaijin or no.

And global warming didn't just start happening during the Bush administration(s). Check the science, it takes tens if not hundreds of years for the greenhouse gases we humans produce to spread throughout the atmosphere so as to cause any kind of wide spread heat retention. (A heat island is NOT global warming.) The global warming we are experiencing now is only the potential result of the industrial revolution. (There are theories that it is related to the tilt of the Earth's axis and the average distance of the Earth to the sun - search for Paleoclimatology if you want more info. Though many scientists believe it is a result of human generated gasses, many also believe that it is a natural process in the Earth's cycles - the opposite of the ice ages perhaps.)

The ozone hole is a different problem altogether, dealing with ultra-violet radiation (cancer causing deadly shit) as opposed to long wave radiation (heat). The chemistry behind that is actually quite interesting if you're into that kinda stuff.

Well, just my half-a-yen's worth.

Two times. The CIA couldn't even assassinate Castro, and not for lack of trying. The CIA has most certainly done some nasty stuff in the past. But then again, so has the KJB, Mossad, etc. The only difference is that the KJB and Mossad are fairly effective, whereas the CIA is not.

And even if the CIA caused the earthquake. So what? It's not like anyone can do anything about it. Might as well get on with your life and stop worrying about things you can't control.

Lifer,
You're mistaken about the science of global warming, which is the recent warming we have seen since the industrial revolution.

). Check the science, it takes tens if not hundreds of years for the greenhouse gases we humans produce to spread throughout the atmosphere so as to cause any kind of wide spread heat retention

Hundreds of years? The industrial revolution was only a century and a half ago.

Ask the Bush administration's own EPA:

Scientists know for certain that human activities are changing the composition of Earth's atmosphere. Increasing levels of greenhouse gases, like carbon dioxide (CO2 ), in the atmosphere since pre-industrial times have been well documented. There is no doubt this atmospheric buildup of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases is largely the result of human activities.

Then you claim:
many [scientists] also believe that it is a natural process in the Earth's cycles

Don't take my word, I just work on this for a living. See what the world's leading climate scientists have to say. They just created their own blog, http://www.realclimate.org/
Then come back and talk to us about the "science."

True stuff. It also gets deeper as some scientists believe that the Earth has passed through some parts of the Milky Way on its long ~200 million year orbit that have denser gas and dust that have diminished the Suns influence on Earth which in turn caused ice to form in unspeakable amounts causing the Earth to change its rotation from its current incline to a more pronounced rotation and even causing some spots on Earth to get no Sun for thousands or even millions of years...

Now there's crackpot: denying that global warming has had an effect on the Earth's climate...

First off, I'm not saying that I don't believe that human activities are causing global warming. I think I'd prefer to use the word accelerating instead of causing, but whatever...

And I'll admit that I was pushing it with the "hundreds of years" line, but it's been a few years (15 or so) since I read that textbook.

The point I was trying to make was simply that there ARE scientists who believe the present warming to be more a natural process than a man-made one. I spent hours trying to convince my boss at the last consulting firm I worked for that human activities had more to do with it than he thought, not to mention all the interesting talks I had with profs back in uni.

I'm glad to know there's another enviro nut out there and wish I could remember the name of my Paleoclimatology text to recommend to you. In quoting Bush's own scientists, be careful because he has been a master of twisting science to his goals. I think you can find here:
Union of Concerned Scientists a letter by many well known scientists expressing their concern over his use of "science" to fuck with environmental policy. In your quote they only state that human activities are changing the composition of the atmoshphere, did they go on to acknowledge that this then is related to global warming?

Try not to jump in people's shit so fast man, we probably have more in common regarding environmental beliefs than you think! :P

Well, no time for the other half yen ...
