comingsoon.net: James Cameron Confirms Battle Angel Alita
Titanic and Terminator 2: Judgment Day director James Cameron has confirmed to NPR that he will next helm the big screen adaptation of Yukito Kishiro's anime comic Battle Angel Alita [Known as "Gunnm" in Japan]. "We're in pre-production right now on a project called 'Battle Angel' which is something I've been working on for several years and we're just, we're finishing up the shooting draft right now. We've been designing, it's a big science fiction film and a couple things that will be interesting about this project," he says in the interview.
Cameron added that "the main character, even though it's a live action film, the main character will be done with CG animation and the second thing that's interesting is we're going to be shooting it in 3D using the stereo imagining system that we've been developing for the documentaries."

Comingsoon.net: James Cameron on Battle Angel!

Cameron:...So we're in pre-production now on a movie called Battle Angel, which is based on a Japanese Manga series of graphic novels by an artist named Yukito Kishiro. It's not in the sort of top ten of graphic novels in Japan; it's a lesser known one, and we're going to make Battle Angel over the next couple of years and release it in '07. By early summer of '07, we expect to have somewhere around a thousand digital 3D theaters that will be able to show an image that looks more or less like what you saw in the IMAX theater but the IMAX theater was film, and this is going to be digital projection.
This will be shown in multiplexes?:
Cameron: Multiplexes everywhere. All cities, all territories. And yeah, you'll wear glasses, obviously.
Which timeline do you intend to focus on?
Cameron: It's a bit of a mélange of the first three books, which means that it pulls forward the motorball story into the Ido, Alita, Hugo story, if you will.
Will it be live action?
Cameron: Live action and CG mixed, meaning we will build sets, we'll shoot with actors and we'll have CG characters. Alita will be CG; she'll be performed by an actress but what you see in the film will be CG.
Like Gollum?
Cameron: That's a very good example.
What is the basic plot of Battle Angel?
Cameron: 26th century, the story takes place 300 years after a societal collapse caused by a major war, but in that society, it's a technological dark age following a pinnacle of achievement far, far beyond where we are right now. So in a sense it's post-apocalyptic, but it's post-apocalyptic from a very high level. So now, you've got cyborg technology as just a way of life. People are augmented a lot as workers and so on, so being a cyborg is not unusual. The main character is a cyborg. She has an organic human brain, and she looks like she's about fourteen years old. She has a completely artificial body and she's lost her memory- she's found in this wreckage and she's reconstituted by this guy who is a cyber-surgeon who becomes her kind of surrogate father. It's a father-daughter relationship story that just has the most insane action that you can imagine. It will be PG-13 -- lots of blood, but it's all blue.

Rant from "RainJacket" on AICN.com
I thought we won World War II? A lot of movies nowadays seem to be remakes from something that originally came from Japan. Terrible remakes from films that aren't all that great to begin with. The Japanese and the American versions of The Ring and The Grudge were all pretty average. It seems all you have to do is make an insanely violent, incoherent mess of a movie and be considered a god on these shores. Like that Miike guy. We have plenty of American idiots who make head-scratchingly awful films already, we don't need to bring in anybody or anything else. Like some of these animes and Saturday Morning Cartoons. Every cartoon on TV is already a Japanese import. All of them. Watch them for one day. It's card-battle cartoon after card-battle cartoon. And it's non-stop. They're all horrific, too, filled with nonsensical storylines and effeminate male characters. We are breeding a generation of "Japanese" kids who all want to play card-battle games. The 9 year-olds today will grow up to be tomorrow's filmmakers... and it's going to be live-action card-battle movies opening every week. And now James Cameron is doing some goofy manga thing? Most manga I have had the misfortune to see usually involves brutally raping a woman who also happens to be part cat. Why does Cameron gotta do this? Is that the future for American entertainment? Intensely violent, confusing, homoerotic card-battle movies? Sure, that's great if you love that kind of shit, but what about the rest of us red-blooded, xenophobic Yanks?

damn, why did they have to go ruin GunnM? The 2 Ova's were pretty damn spot on, but, hey the manga was sublime, especially the wonderfull ending. damn shame about the rushed side story published afterwards.

the problem here is, Cameron is getting too old to really commit to a series of movies, and GunnM's real strength lies not in action but character development and revelation, its great early on, but matures mid way on a scale comparable perhaps to Nausicca. A one movie deal will just end up a mess and afaik the manga in english is out of print anyhow, so its a weird choice altogether really.

what gets me about these intnl funded productions is the watered down product that gets produced, look at the "success" of gits, pure concentrated action, with none of the humour or intelligence of the original manga, i`m still in two minds whether to actually view the (new) appleseed movie and gits sequel, i shudder at the result, not to mention the unavoidable god awful ost... Patlabor, the people behind those movies sure know how to adapt manga to the big screen..

i hope that live action take on "touch" gets released on dvd soon after its run though! :D

JAMES CAMERON SEEKS NEW TALENT FOR A MAJOR MOTION PICTURE

Let's be trite and say Jessica Alba.

...Based on a recent casting call, the movie is definitely happening - and, potentially at least, it's going to have an unknown in the role of Alita, a warrior robot chick. Needless to say, the lady is hot. Additionally (at least according to the text of the call), "She moves and behaves with confidence and a sense of nobility. Lithe as a cat. Athletic and agile, she is a warrior." Rowr.
According to the full text of the casting call, anyone between about 16 and 29 will be considered, regardless of ethnicity (hotness is assumed, of course). One online resource claims that the character as drawn somewhat resembles Kate Beckinsale and Mia Kirshner, except younger, and wearing tighter clothes. Gunnma fans, if you were in charge, who would you cast as Alita?

Didn't Fox purchase the "Battle Angel" anime licence? I initially thought that was a in order to avoid lawsuits because of "Dark Angel" beared to similar an aestheic resemblance to "Battle Angel Alita"

I was speaking to an ADV Films representative, they stated they quit pressing the DVDs for that series because Fox had bought them out. Check out Amazon.com on the availabilty of the Battle Angel DVD.

I thought Lacy Chabert would be good to play this part.
