BBC.com: Student injured in random attack
A foreign student was left in a critical condition after he was stabbed in an unprovoked attack in Brighton. The 24-year-old man, who is Japanese, was attacked as he walked through the Manor Hill area of the city early on Saturday evening. Police said it was a "motiveless" attack where the man was left for dead. The victim was taken to hospital where he is expected to make a full recovery. Two men from the area were questioned and have been released on police bail. The incident happened at 1800 GMT near Brighton Racecourse. A police helicopter was scrambled to try to catch the offender.

Brighton is a popular location for language schools. Japanese make up a large proportion of students, many of whom are on homestays

I think the FG who was mugged in Shinjuku fresh off the plane fared better than this poor guy.

The Argus (Brighton local rag): Student stabbed a week after he arrived to learn English
A Japanese student who was knifed and left for dead had arrived in Britain just eight days earlier. Police spoke briefly with Takayuki Ichijo, 23, at the Royal Sussex County Hospital yesterday. But his injuries and the effects of medication meant he was not able to help the investigation into his attack. Mr Ichijo suffered a punctured liver and stomach after he was repeatedly stabbed on January 15 as he went to make a telephone call. Mr Ichijo's family rushed to his bedside and were expected to arrive in Britain last night.
The incident is the latest of a spate of crimes, including robberies and assaults, against foreign nationals in Brighton and Hove. Police confirmed today there have been 20 incidents in six months. Mr Ichijo, from the mountainous Nagano region on Japan's Honshu Island, had been studying at a language school after arriving in Brighton on January 7. The student had left his host family, in Firle Road, Brighton, at about 3.15pm to walk to a nearby telephone box. A dog walker found him in a pool of blood at 6pm on a piece of scrubland at Manor Hill, near Brighton Racecourse. Police said they had no evidence to confirm a racial motive for the attack but were keeping all options open.
Det. Chief Insp Graham Pratt said an interpreter was helping officers talk with the victim but he was still too weak to help with inquiries. Mr Pratt said: "The victim has been spoken to by officers but he is still very poorly and has not been able to give any significant information. Hopefully, in the next couple of days, he will have recovered to the point where he can help more. "He is still under the effects of the drugs he had to aid his recovery. "I imagine, just from the nature of his injuries, that he will be very shocked by what happened. "Without more information from the victim, the motive for the attack is still very much under consideration." Two men taken into custody after the attack have been released on police bail but were charged with a separate offence. Mr Pratt said: "They remain suspects to the inquiry and we are exploring the account we got from them to see whether it stands up."
