You know, I used to own an MD player/recorder, and was tempted to buy a Net-MD unit. But Sony won't release a Mac version of their software.

So now I own an iPod.

Hmm.. I used MD for about 3-4 years, and the biggest hassle was having to change discs all the time.. something you sure don't have to do with a 40-GB iPod!! I haven't got one yet, but plan to pick one up. Having all my music right there is such a convenient idea.

Strangely enough - the MD seems to be most popular in Japan - I'm not sure how well iPod's caught on over there though - anyone know?

Now.. I just need to find some good headphones. 8)

If the new Sony players are small and cheap enough, and if they play MP3s, Sony might actually be able to do something with them.

I haven't looked at the players closely but I highly doubt they play MP3. :( Or anything else besides Sony's proprietary format.

700yen for 1GB of music storage is cheap enough to be attractive...

I've ripped my entire collection of CDs into 320kbps MP3... I don't think I want to go through that again to get those MP3s into another format. :( I won't buy a portable player that won't play my MP3 collection.

Yeah its a strange one alright Sony's betamax-like vision.

They've always had a nice line-up of music players but seemed blind when it comes to what the market wants.

Unfortunately I'm one of those people who moved most of my stuff onto MD when it first came out, now I'm stuck with a dying format and no way to get the music back!!!

The ipod is drawing me in ever so slowly

Yep... There insistence to use their own memory format is really stupid too. It's not like it offers any particular advantage, other than being different. Being different for the sake of being different seems to be a big advantage in Sony's warped mindset though.

There will be players around for some time yet... Just a PITA to have to carry all the discs around with you instead of having everything inside one player.
