New free monthly for FGs - "Player"

Postby Mulboyne » Thu Jan 20, 2005 4:08 pm

Anyone seen the new monthly "Player" magazine? It is published by Foss Publishing House who have brought us essentials like "EL", "Epicure" and "Orexi". They haven't put anything about this launch on their website. I've seen a poster for the first edition which promises articles with titles like "Notorious Drunks", "Hunting in Japan", "Player of the Month - Wanton excess and shameless decadence" and "Slipping between the sheets with Shuko". Apparently available free in bars. clubs and supermarkets. It sounds dreadful but, somehow, I want to see it for myself. I've no idea if distribution is nationwide.
Paddy Foley's in Tokyo held a party for Foss last month saying "PLAYER promises to be HOT and SPARKLING and will certainly brighten up the current paper media environment."

I read through it. Shuko is indeed nice to look at. The "Player of the Month" was funny, just because I thought most of it was faked (if it wasn't then I sort of feel bad for the guy). The escort interview was ok. But as well, I think most of it was faked. I don't remember much else.

It is marketed to the banker/trader demographic. It might work. The advertisers appear to be the same as in every other free publication in Tokyo.

I haven't seen the second issue, if indeed there is one.

A guy at Japan Today didn't care for it all at all...

An even bigger laugh is the English-language publisher Foss's attempt to mimic the trend with their recently launched magazine "Player." It features men talking about how they spend their money on luxury goods and includes interviews with hostesses and prostitutes about how they ply their trade. I have to admit, I looked at every page, but mostly because it presented the theme in such a cheesy, superficial way. Men's magazines focused on telling guys how to be guys, i.e. get laid, have been around forever and they don't have to be stupidly written. but it's a very difficult formula to pull off, and "Player" fails miserably. a great laugh, though...

I was invited to the launch but didn't go.. can't remember why - perhaps I was cleaning the grout in my bathroom that night - but whatever the reason, I was certainly doing something more interesting that the party. A friend who was there said it was extremely lame.

I read the magazine and thought it was funny but well produced. I am not in their target demographic however.

I don't think it will last very long with this formla as most of these "playaz" are generally ridiculed these days along with the charisma men. Well they are ridiculed in my circle of friends anyway.

Maybe you didn't notice, but I think a photo our own favorite FG player, Mr. Bling Sunglasses himself 8) was featured in the first issu. Of course, he had one his frightingly attractive babes clinging onto him.

Yes! FG member, "x" aka Damon was the first person pictured in their Player Launch party photo-montage. Just look at the upper right-hand corner of party photo-montage towards the last page of the magazine.
