What book do you recommend I read next ?

Okay, I am going to get "The Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy" after you guys recommended it after i asked what's the meaning of life. I also read reviews and everyone seem to found it entertaining and made you think at the same time.

Anyways, to get "Free shipping," I need to spend over 25 dollars, so now I can get another book, which do you recommend???

Another book by the same author of Hitchiker or what other book? Any suggestions? And please tell me why, because i'm sure other people will have suggestions too and I am only looking for one more book at this time.

Thanks, anyone?

From Jerry Pournelle

I have two Books of the Month, both on the same theme. First. Cowboy Capitalism: European Myths, American Reality, by Olaf Gersemann (Cato Institute, 2004; ISBN 1930865627). The publisher is the Cato Institute, which should be warning enough of the viewpoint, but the arguments are sound and there is a lot of data, unlike the usual tome on economic policy. The second book is Bill Blunden's Offshoring IT: the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly (Apress, 2004; ISBN 1590593960), which once again is long on data, and intelligently discusses an important subject.

The Computer Book of the Month is The Nolo Press legal work Getting Permission: How to License & Clear Copyrighted Materials Online and Off by Richard Stim (2004; ISBN 141330074X). This is comprehensive and very useful for anyone compiling materials for publication. The other computer book of the month is Mac OS X Power Hound, Panther Edition, by Rob Griffiths (O'Reilly, 2004; ISBN 059600818X). It's a compilation of tricks and procedures for Mac users, and I suspect it will be as useful to experienced Mac users as it has been to me. There's just a lot of good stuff in there.

Since that book is the first in a 5-part trilogy (yes, weird -- apparently that was a publisher's error!!) why not get some of the other books?

1. The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (1979)
2. The Restaurant at the End of the Universe (1980)
3. Life, the Universe, and Everything (1982)
4. So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish (1984)
5. Mostly Harmless (1992)

If you want a good Japanese book, try Japan Sinks, or Nihon Chimbotsu. It's a fascinating read on many levels and is an excellent portrait of the Japanese people. The English translation is abridged.
