China 'threat' strengthens US-Japan military ties
Defence & Strategic, January 21, 2005
This is just the beginning of a war of nerves of military strategy among the world's three most powerful countries, based on real hardball politics, military hardware and spyware. The theater is the East China Sea, surrounding Taiwan and Okinawa. The actors are Japan, its ally the United States, and an increasingly powerful China that already is an economic powerhouse and is expanding and upgrading its military on the sea, on land and in the air.

This perceived Chinese "threat" - vehemently denied by Beijing - is a factor in the gradual transformation of Japan from a pacifist nation, with pacificism enshrined in the US-imposed constitution, to one that assumes a more powerful role on the world stage - and will not countenance a perceived threat from its formidable neighbor to the west. To handle this seeming "threat", Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi is rushing to change Japan's traditional pacifist military posture - urged on by Washington to play a larger role and expand its military operations in the so-called "arc of instability" stretching from Northeast Asia to the Middle East.

Straw talks up arms sales to China as Japan frowns

Straw talks up arms sales to China as Japan frowns
Associated Press, January 22, 2005
British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw yesterday defended his country's campaign to lift an EU arms embargo on China, calling it inconsistent when human-rights violators such as North Korea weren't under a similar ban.

[...]

The US, Japan and other governments have lobbied the EU to retain the arms embargo. Washington says arms sales could undermine East Asian security, endanger Taiwan and hurt efforts to push China to improve human rights.

EU leaders say the embargo could be lifted in as little as six months following an official review. Britain, France and Germany say the ban hinders relations with Beijing, and that there are safeguards preventing any arms sales from being used improperly.

Dude, you're new to this board so you really don't know what you're talking about. GJ likes to talk politics and so do I. He is not an America basher. He might not like the current administration or the direction the US is going right now so he is critical.

Not really. I don't trust China; don't care much for their government policies, attitude, human rights record, etc... But why should the EU be prohibited from selling arms to China? If the EU doesn't, Russia will.

Again, I'm not much a fan of China.. Check my posts. I just feel the US has lowered itself the past four years, so it really has no right to dictate what other countries can and can't do.

I wouldn't call lobbying dictating. Besides I'd rather have Russia selling arms to China than the UK and France. At least they'll get crappier technology  And just because Russia can do it doesn't mean that the EU should. Since when is shitty policy ok just because some other country does it? At least give me a good reason as to why the EU should be able to sell weapons to China.

haig, I understand you're a Marine]really[/i] need you..

As for an 'inferiority complex'? I'm inferior in some areas, superior in others.. I don't think I have a problem with that.. But I do get better everyday..

Depends how heavy handed the 'lobbying' is]And just because Russian can do it doesn't mean that the EU should. Since when is shitty policy ok just because some other country does it?[/quote] I think I agree with you; shitty policy is shitty policy.. I just find it ironic, after Iraq, that the US still thinks it knows what's best for other countries.
Samurai_Jerk wrote:At least give me a good reason as to why the EU should be able to sell weapons to China.
Because China would get better technology than Russia could supply, resulting in less collateral damage?

A better question might be 'Has Japan already gone nuclear?'

Some of my sources in the Japanese nuclear industry have privately told me that this DID happen in the sixties. I am however not confident of one source, as he also claimed that 'a major nuclear accident was not possible in Japan due to the high level safety'.

I'm pretty sure it has.. What does Japan do with all it's nuclear waste? Isn't it true waste from nuclear power plants can be reprocessed for weapons production?..

I don't get all the scare for China having a modern military. China has a very good track record with it's military history, I trust it much more than I trust Japan. China is concerned about modernizing China and protecting itself from outside forces, which historically speaking, is a smart thing to do if you are China. Japan seems to have a history of acquiring some weapons, thinking it's hot shit and invading. The way that a lot of Japanese fall blatently in line with the propaganda, are always saying that Japan is too small, and saying they need a new national focus causes me concern.
