Childhood Memories of Japan- what shows did you like?

Postby Mels » Sun Jan 23, 2005 2:20 pm

After the threads discussing foods we miss and questions we despise, I thought about the shows I use to watch in Japan as a child. Wondered if any of you had any favorites. No friends of mine here know what the hell I am talking about!!!

For me:
1. Ultra man- all seven
2. Kamen raida
3. Yamato
4. Sally- Mahostukai
5. Dorai mon
6, Hiedi
7. Candy Candy
8. Forgot the name- Big white dog in the Alps
9. Getaro- his father was an eyeball and his good friend was Nezumi Otoko
10. Rupan the Third
11. Hachichi dayo, Zenshu go
12. TV Jockey
13. Mumin- hippo family
14. Forgot the name- orphaned honey bee looking for his mom
15. Q Taro

There are others, but I cant remember now.

Peace out

I think you're probably the only one here with childhood memories of Japan. :-)

In the late 60's and early 70's here in the US it was:
Speed Racer
Kimba
Godzilla
Ultraman

I cannot tell you how much I looked forward to Speed Racer every day after school!

When I was in the US in the mid 80's, I saw Speed Racer and had to rub my eyes. I did not realize they were showing that here. My freinds knew about speed racer, but many did not know that I grew up on it and it was from Japan.

They showed Ultraman here too? I had no idea. That is cool. I have seen the new animes....Dragon Ball etc. When I see those cartoons, it does take me back to my childhood.

I loved Kimba the white lion in the late 70's..

Then in the early 80's "Monkey" was on every afternoon at 3:30. Dubbed into English. We were all addicted.

Then in the mid- 80's the NHK drama "Oshin" was shown every Tuesday night on SBS. My Japanese teacher encouraged us to watch it and I think it was on for my entire highshool years. It was a long drama after all. Does anybody know where to get the DVD of this? Is there an NHK shop for stuff like this?

I never knew that Speed Racer was Japanese.. I loved that one too on Saturday morning cartoons.

In SoCal in the 70's, it was Star Blazers (Yamato), Battle of the Planets (Gatchaman) and loads of Godzilla and Gamera movies on Tom Hatton's Family Film Festival. In the early 80's you had Voltron, then Robotech (Macross, etc.) in the latter half...

Having just returned from a 2 1/2 year Hawaiian sojourn, I was surprised that lackluster Kamen Rider clone Kikaida was popular in the 70's and has remained a staple of local tv ever since. A Kikaida 'performance' group even does half-time shows at UH games! 8O
