Brief tribute to a taxi driver

Postby Mulboyne » Mon Jan 24, 2005 10:02 am

This over-large picture might be better in "Random Nihonjin", and it will surely find a home there but I want to give a brief moment in the sun to a taxi driver I met this morning who explained that his got his ear pierced after an Australian girlfriend asked him to do so 30 years ago. His taxi company wouldn't let him show it in his ID picture but he wears it against their instructions. He says he gets tips from girls who find it cho-kawaiii

Meeting people like that actually boast my spirits about living here - someone who has found their own small way to rebel. :)

More "rebel" are the female taxi and truck drivers I've met here in Japan (driving seems to be the hardcore alt career for women escaping the water-trade and abusive partners).

God that is a frightening thought! I don't even want to THINK what the interior of a female truck driver's truck would look like given the way most male truckers decorate their trucks!

There is a scene in the film "Out", based on the book by Natsuo Kirino, which features the main characters finding refuge in a truck driven by a woman. The driver is played by Hideko Yoshida who played the part of the aunt/maid in Peter Greenaway's "Pillow Book". The scene is supposed to show how women can be strong, independent and yet still look out for each other. Very good cameo; clean cab too.

It's funny how we gaijin applaud 'rebeling' against society. Why on earth is it a good thing? I think it's a sin against ones own culture to 'rebel'. All that leads to is a , decaying, disfunctional socitey rather like the 'west' has become. I think that taxi driver is fool, and should be fired on the spot. Perhaps I will email this photo to his employer so he gets what he deserves.

You should see all the scum people now 'rebelling' in Australia. You have teens poping 'party drugs' and killing themselves on the dance floor, drunken vial parties with 'group sex', people swearing in public, road rage the list goes on. All these increadible changes in our socitey have been slowly gaining momentum. Rebelling always starts very small, but it always gets out of hand, and it leads to social decay and destruction.

No, Maths Dude, you're thinking of the dangly ear-rings. They're the ones that lead to social decay and destruction. The little stud he's wearing is harmless.

 And it all started with that fucking earring!

There are some who believe 'rebelling' fosters creativity, inventiveness, and progress.. Can you give some examples of revolutionaries that changed the world through conformity?

I think you're confusing self-expression with stupidity.. And you are talking about Australia.

Funny stuff...

You know, there is not much better than meeting a cool taxi driver. I recently saw a show where gay-no-jin were complaing about taxi drivers, and I had experienced many of there complaints: grunts instead of polite responses, frustrated remarks at trips which were too long, too short, or to inconvenient areas, etc... I usually chalked it up to being a FG, but it's nice to know that even the ...ahem, talents, ahem....have the same problems.

I gotta say something nice about Japan:
The taxi drivers here have given free rides few times since I was on crutches. Hell, when no taxis would stop for me in 3am in Roppongi, the cops called and got me a few ride. 8)

Generally speaking, the Japanese taxi drivers wanna talk my ears off when they figure out I'm conversant.
