Apple Voted Most Influential Brand

Despite a much-hyped initial public offering, Apple has ousted Google as the world's most influential brand, according to a poll of branding professionals.

In the survey of almost 2,000 ad executives, brand managers and academics by online magazine Brandchannel, Apple (Research) ousted search engine Google (Research) from last year's top spot, but the surprise to many will be Al Jazeera's entry into the top five.

"With all the news from Iraq and Afghanistan and the 'war on terror', a lot of people are really tuned into the news, and the major news sources have a western bias," Brandchannel Editor Robin Rusch said. "I think people are tuning in to Al Jazeera and looking at its Web site because it does offer another viewpoint..
And somewhere in the middle is the truth..

I read that... and I call "BS"! Look at these brands... eBay? C'mon. No one outside of North America really uses it. Yahoo Auction has a lock on Japan. The battle is on for China.

This is a survey of 2000 ad execs is just ridiculous. Al Jazeera over Fox News or CNN? Google over Yahoo (Yahoo is the #1 site based on visits while Google is still a distant 2nd... according to Alexa.com). Mini? Nokia? please.

Coca-cola? over Pepsi? Coke doesn't even try anymore. Seems to me the brand is stale and Pepsi is generating a lot more buzz.

Apple can keep their #1 spot. They've been bringing hype to the forefront like no company has in a long time. So can Ikea and Starbucks.

Why do we even care what some advert perverts think? Why did I just waste my time commenting on this?

Having worked in the ad biz myself, this list doesn't surprise me. Ad execs have a very warped view of the market place and their place in it.

I can see ad guys putting Apple #1. They are all slaves to the cult of Apple, but it's more than that. Ad people, particularly the "creatives", are absolutely obsessed with being viewed as hip and cool amongst their peers. Apple is very chic. If you don't have an Apple powerbook and ipod in the advertising world you will be ostracized. Just think Japanese high school girls and you have an idea of the advertising culture.
