I've posted this before, but on one of my return visits to the States I brought with me a bag of 10 yen coins; they work as US quarters in most machines.. Saved on my laundry bill. ;) Albeit, a miniscule amount.. But it's the thought that counts.

Xinhua: Japan eyes improvement in vending machines to tackle fake coin cases
Japan's vending machine makers are urged to improve the capability of sensors in their products to tackle an increasing number of fake 500-yen coin discoveries in Japan. The Finance Ministry and National Police Agency on Friday agreed in a meeting that the government should file such a requestwith the Japan Vending Machine Manufacturers Association. It was reported at the meeting that some counterfeit 500-yen coins were accepted at automated teller machines and vending machines during testing using several dozen fake coins, the ministry said.
