Ah, the joys of life abroad...

Postby Socratesabroad » Mon Feb 14, 2005 7:13 pm

Or maybe I should say 'life in China.'

Sitting at home, messing about on the computer when...my power dies. Ah, must be a fuse methinks. Wrong. I'm out of power, which in China means I have to go to the local power office and buy some more electricity. Which normally wouldn't be a problem, except that the lazy b@stards who usually only work five hours a day have taken the entire week off for the Chinese New Year. So there I am, waiting for three days in absolute darkness (at least at night) until the power office opens. Had to go buy a flashlight and batteries at a conbini so I could see my way around.

And China's supposed to be the next economic powerhouse...

Yeah, right.

Yep, you heard me right. Buy power. You buy units of electricity ahead of time and then use them up until the meter runs out. Water and gas fees, thank God, are charged in a sane manner by a meter reader once a month (of course, gas service doesn't actually start until late Oct/Nov, so it's not entirely sane, but...).

Ahh, the joys of checking my electricity meter each day to ensure I'll have juice for the night.

Tianjin, a relatively modern large, industrial city about an hour and a half from Beijing. And thus my location listing of 'Tianjin, Apex of Chinese culture?!?!"

Tianjin. My best freind's girlfriend lives there. Never heard about buying power. that must suck.
But, then again, you dont have to worry about your bill at the end of the month.

Store up on batteries for your flashlight..
