Lying to your students?

Postby Hobo-Erotica » Wed Feb 16, 2005 7:25 pm

Well ive been teaching here for 5 months and ive noticed Ive started lying to almost all my students, because frankly its easier.
These are the porkys ive told in the last 3 days

1) In the UK sushi is illegal (gave up trying to explain to a student why i hadn't tasted uni before)

2) It is illegal in the UK not to visit the dentist every 6 months, the penalty for not doing so is a fine or imprisonment (On why a pretty J-girl with bad teeth should go visit the dentist)

3) America is still a colony of the UK (That is why they still speak English, rather than have their "own" language)

4) It is traditional for a bride to offer anal sex on the wedding night, it is 15 years bad luck for the marriage not to do so (No explanation needed)

5) In America, homeless people are round up and shot, the order came from George Bush himself (Just getting down with the liberal chicks with this 1)

Its just easier to lie about the differences isnt it?

How can i explain to an 18 year old japanese person about why westerners dont act and think like the Japanese.

Any cultural differences between us and the japanese, i just invent a law to explain why we act differently.

You are not the sharpest knife in the drawer there, are you pal????

No it is not easier... you are just doing your bit to re-inforce negative stereotypes out of sheer laziness.

But I fear you are just making a rod for your own back as it is going to take you more time undoing your lies than it is to give the true answers. Remember, a valid answer is "I don't know why XYZ is different" and then give an opinion rather than passing off a lie as a fact.

Idiot.

What kind of students do you teach? In 10 years here teaching a wide variety of students, I had NEVER had the topic of anal sex come up.

Giving annoying 'I want to speak engrish at you' Japanese a brush-off answer is something we all have done, however doing it to students is not a great way to insure job security, but I suppose if you teach at a scum of the earth Eikaiwa who cares? :)

I've never lied to my students... I think that tells people a lot about who you are as a person. I feel sorry that your students have to listen to your lies.

But I wonder what kind of class you have with anal sex discussions.. rather sickening...

HA!, please dont make yourself sick about anal sex

Believe it or not, some students have become friends, and as friends we talk about girlfiends/sex/World War2 etc.

That explains a lot... Do you not have anything else to say that is truthful and interesting or are you such a bore that lies make you seem interesting?

Or is it that you are bored and want to make yourself entertaining and interesting?

I'd like to pretend that I haven't lied, but I think the best I can settle for is that I haven't lied with the intent of hurting anyone.

Lying can be a useful in classrooms, if the lie is outrageous enough it will often force even the most reluctant students to respond.

Ive never told anyone a lie to hurt them, just to save time on a conversation that will leave us both utterly exasperted.

Eg Explaining to an eigo bandit that we do eat sushi in the UK, but not uni because British are very squeemish/ small minded about urchin roe. This after being dragged around Odaiba all day talking about why western men like David Beckham are sooooo cute

Re anal sex? my god a man lies to a woman in a bar to "get some", a sad day for the male kind indeed...........

I don't hold out much hope for your future prospects if you find proper explanations to common questions too difficult.

For how long? A few months on contract before coming to Japan?

And you're right, an SQL Server developer is not really work... I've done it too so I know what is involved.

Yeah, bears can be a problem, cant they?

I cant think of bears without thinking of that guy, Homer J. Simpson from that "Simpsons" documentary on FOX.

Why is reality TV filled with Bozo's like this?????

Forming a plural by placing an apostrophe and then an S to prevent confusion about pronunciation in foreign words, was until the 19th century considered a correct and common procedure. However, bozo is a N. American word that most likely came about due to a mixture of newly formed creoles and pidgins (fast changing and developed languages brought about by diverse linguistic heritage). It is, although American, hardly considered a foreign word. Whether it came about before the 19th century's dawn is also questionable. We used to eat with our hands, but do we still do so?

Rhetorical, I know. I'm answering in case you're unfamiliar with such terms.

Ahhhh but not being American makes all American words foreign to me.

If you take the definition of the word "foreign" to mean from a country different to ones own (and i think we should) then "Bozo's" is to me a foreign word.
Hence my spelling of the word

I'm sorry, those terms are known as Americanisms. Second, using that method of conversion to a plural form stopped c. 1800.

Uh, your defenses are getting pretty weak.
I'd suggest you stop already, unless you have something better to say than just "daddy this and daddy that".
You're not proving any (even if you had any) of your points. Rather, you're just using 'fillers' (weak ones, may I add) to delay the debate on hand, until you can think of something really clever to say. Which IMO isn't going to happen.
Just my take.
